Is this true of both #1 and #2 diesel? I vaguely remember someone saying that only the lower grade of diesel fuel will ahve wax..

no the grade of diesel and the wax content are not necessarily linked in the petrochemical world. I ventured that our winter grade, containing added kerosine, would not be as prone to the problem but I was wrong.

The wax content of diesel derives from the crude oil source... Wax is suppressed in Dino by addatives that allow it to crystalise in such a shape as not to block filters apparently...

Personally I don't see any "wax". I see fuel contamination, yes, but to assume this is from mixing dino-D with veg oil is a streach at best.
The small spheres look like a mixture of polar and non polar substances (water&oil) perhaps?
The black slimy stuff looks suspeciously like hum bugs and their biofilm (jelly like stuff) that interfaces the water with the fuel. Here's a comparison photo

As for the "forming wax" I called it foam. I see it mostly when I mix my blends in cool or cold weather. I actually skimmed it off the top of the bucket one time and put it in a jar. It stayed that way for awhile. But once I put it in the sun, it collapsed into a solution. Ambient temp was about 40F.

Some how theoretical pondering has become hard fact. Please, somebody reproduce wax (parafins) falling out of diesel fuel by mixing it with any type of veg oil. Do it in a lab or your kitchen, but I bet you can't do it. Especially in late summer early fall temps.

Have had great results blending diesel and veggie. This is of course if you start with a good quality oil.My oil is screened and settled then the best off the top is used/nothing else.
P.S. Don't know what your fuel is like down there but no problems with seperation of #1 diesel and canola.

No "down there" involved. I used diesel from Norther OH to Northern FL. on my long trip and mixed along the way in a seperate container of settled oil. I got wax (or whatever it was) no matter what station I got diesel at. This was a few years ago now.
