The April edition of Energy Self-Sufficiency Newsletter (www.rebelwolf.com) , is now out, and it's got a few articles about biodiesel.
Energy Self-Sufficiency Newsletter is a free online publication devoted to hands-on alternative energy. biodiesel and biofuels are covered from several perspectives. My articles are a series which will take you through the learning process, with different topics covered each month. My column this month shows you how to make a test batch of biodiesel. I also tried something new and made some supporting webpages for the article: 'Making a Test Batch of Biodiesel' article: www.rebelwolf.com - download the April ESSN (currently pdf) coming in a couple of days- html version supporting webpages at localb100 include the following, illustrated: titration testing oil for water, where to buy bulk methanol, how to make an improvised test batch scale Use this thread to discuss the ESSN article or the supporting webpages. This is the first month I"m doing this webpage-enhanced article, so there's currently an unexpected annoyance if you click on the article supporting webpages links from within the pdf- I suggest using your right-click and choosing 'open link in new page' so it doesn't navigate away from the pdf and you lose your place. oh, and this material (the supporting webpages) will make it's way into the Localb100.com Collaborative Biodiesel Tutorial project. Feel free to give feedback on the supporting webpages with that in mind- we at the Collaborative Tutorial project want feedback and comments.

Referring to the oil titration page on the Collaborative Biodiesel Tutorial site, it mentions making a reference tester solution using one gram of catalyst in one liter of water. KOH in bulk form usually assays around 90% pure. When using KOH, shouldn't we use 1 gram plus 10 percent for the tester solution too?

No, the purity will be compensated for in the titration. You will need to adjust your base amount for the purity difference (7gr/l + 10% = 7.7gr/l). 2001 & 2002 F-250 PSD CC Superduty Running On Homebrew! |

Having a spot of difficulty. I have made about 150 gallons but it appears I am running into a sophmore jinx. When I titrate all I am getting is a coffee with cream colored (light tan) result which is semi solid to solid. I am guessing this is water in the oil and it is emulsifying (?). Aside from heating to 220 degrees F, how can I rid myself of the water? (If this is the problem)
