Benz Smart car turbo-diesel question
Greetings fellow biodiesel fans
I would like to know what a used Benz Smart car 3 cylinder turbo-diesel engine with all the needed black boxes and harness cost used from the salvage yards in Europe or the UK. Can any of the forum members find out for me? The car has gone through a couple of model years now and should have engines avaiable in the salvage market. This engine would go good in a small tin skiff.(15-25mph@15-20mpg on BD would be great!)
Other than the Benz Smart car engine, what is the smallest displacement diesel engine commonly used in cars over there?

The diesel version is only just becoming available in the UK so you might have to wait a couple of weeks.

The smallest one that I know of is a Japanese Daihatsu 3 cylinder 993cc turbo diesel Indirect injection. This puts out 47 bhp and has been around since the mid 80s.

even in Germany the Smart Diesel is only available since spring 01. I´m driving a Volkswagen Lupo 3L Diesel (which shall mean 3l consumption per 100 km under ideal circumstances = up to 80 miles per gallon). It´s a 1200 ccm 3Zyl Tdi Diesel with 60 HP and high pressure injection. The car is pretty fast and rather comfortable (like Smart with automatic and additional possibility to shift to TipTronic). But mostly BioDiesel is not supported in Germany. Volkswagen offers modification kits but is reluctant to BioDiesel based on the experience from long term tests. Does anybody have more information/experience on running a 3L Lupo on BioDiesel?

It's manufactures state that they will not honour the waranty if you use biodiesel in it, I'm sure that whatever supposed reason why it can't run on biodiesel is just an easily rectified matter, Since you intend to use a secondhand engine waranty claimes shouldn't worry you.
