I ordered some more filterbags. I am thinking about a four-in-one set up.

Four bags all together. 25-10-5-1 micron. Basically a 4 layer bag. I think with the desending micron rating they will all flow about the same and clog up at a similar rate.

I liked the idea of using a "support" bag on the outside of everything. Maybe a fifth 25 Micron bag outside the rest that would never need changing.

Or maybe the 1 micron bag will be the support bag. Even if it stretches a little over time, I think the micron rating also goes back down as it slowly clogs anyway.

Should work okay, but your 25 micron bag is going to plug long before any of the other ones. May be a better idea to go with a little wider split, for instance 100-25-5-1 or even 100-50-25-1.

That's a good idea. get rid of the big chunks first with a 100 micron.

I have something sort of similar on my cold filter setup...

75 Micron Stainless steel strainer, 30 micron filter, 10 micron Goldenrod.

After a couple hundred gallons, the output at the nozzle slowed to about half. I replaced just the Goldenrod cartridge last night and the flow is just about back where it ws originally..

Will replace the 30 micron maybe this weekend see what happens.

I'm currently using only a 25 and 5 filters.

I left the WVO settle a few days before I filter.

The 5 micron bag plugs a lot sooner than the 25 bag as it is already so I'm not worried about then need for another level of "PRE" filtering.

I figure the 10 micron bag in between would even things out.

And I was already thinking about a 1 micron final filter anyway. Even though the car's filter is supposedly a 10 micron unit.

I bagged some 25's and 5's from http://www.filtersource.com/ they seem to be doing ok. I find that I can still get silty stuff if I don't allow the veggie to settle long enough though.

Thanks for the info on the filter bag sources. Which size and material works the best and is the best value . How many do you suggest for a first timer who will be running 10 gal /wk WVO in a 80%diesel/20% WVO mix until I learn more and can accumulate my WVO parts . - thnaks

can't say...I'm just starting too.

But a few different ones or buy a sample pack and see what works for you.

I think most are using industry standard size 1 filters. I use poly filters.

you will want to end up with at least a 10 micron product, as that is what most fuel filters are rated at. Smaller is always better.

My system is unheated so I'm using a 5 micron and plan to go to a 1 micron for final filter.

I tried a variety of filter materials. The best improvised filter I tried was the leg of a pair of blue jeans. I had many successes and no serious failures but was not entirely happy with any of the improvised filters. I used a 5 micron filter from filterbag.com and felt it was not adequate. I ordered some 1 micron filterbags from them and have only filtered one batch with them so far. My first impression is that this is going to work to my satisfaction. Filtering oil to 1 micron is much slower and has renewed my interest in an unattended filter setup.

Do not use poorly filtered oil, you will have problems.

I ordered five 25's and five 5's about three thousand miles ago and am just starting on my last fresh pair. I have kept the last two sets of bags for potential cleaning although I may simply discard the 25 and reuse the fiver without cleaning.
PRESETTLING is crucial to success. The volume of crud that hits the bottom of my cubees is staggering. Anywhere from 5% to 40% sludge that will shorten the life of any filter it hits.

One of these days I may cease my experiments in misapplied cheapness and throw down 20 bills to buy Dana's plans.

Think of the value of your time. Dana's plans are a excellant cost/value ratio. Avoid continued guesswork.

I allow my oil to settle for 2 weeks and filter thru ONE 5 micron filter. I collect some high MP oil in it, but have had no clogging issues, other than the High MP oils.

Why are you feeling the need to filter thru 4 filters of diffeing specifications?
