Please forgive me if this subject has already been discussed, I haven't found it.
Filtering WVO is best done to 5 microns or lower from what I can gather reading the various posts, so my question is how does one go about making cotton filter bags, and from what kind of cotton. How does one know what the micron rating is ? Ok, that's more than one question.
Thanks

I go to a local thrift store and find nice thick fabric (cotton). Something with a nice tight weave that doesn't strectch. I hold it up toward the lights in the room and if I can't see through it I'll use it.

I then sew two bags and double them up (one inside the other). they last a while with settled oil - the top clear oil of the cubees and leaving the murkey stuff until the weather warms up and it settle's out a little more. the bags I sew are about 20" long and about 16" in circumfrence. I pour the oil through a metal screen (its actually a collander) to catch the big chunks. The oil sits in a 55 gal drum that I can heat to allow any water or crud that may have gotten this far to settle out (I usually heat it for a day or two)

I then have a goldenrod fuel filter (with 'water bloc' protection)between the 55 gal barrel that has the fabric filtered oil in it and the gear pump that I use to transfer the oil into the tank in my car. The golden rod is 10 micron. in my car i have a 2 micron filter before the injection pump. i haven't changed it yet (in over a year)

hope that helps

another idea is getting a roll of nylon. Take a look around you should be able to find rolls of micron rated nylon monofilament which you can clean off when it gets dirty.

I buy different levels of filtering felt from Mcmaster.com That way I can have the bags sewn to whatever size I want and stick them inside each other supported by metal basket. Lately I bought a 5 gal drum funnel and just lay different layers of felt and let it gravity feed.
