There is a fellow by the name of C J Hall who has two Cummins TD Dodges 2004 & 2005. His thread on this site is pretty extensive with what he blended his wvo with. Originally he started out using DSE but apparently found out what it was and uses his own ingredients in place of DSE. He'll let you know what it is for a price. Ah capitalism! Anyway the thread is real good reading on blending. Here it is.

Question: Isn't Xylene and these other things bad to breath? Doesn't burning them in a motor just atomize them into the atmosphere where we all breath it?? Is this safe? I love my ip and engine in general but aren't we trying to improve or at least not degrade as fast as dino diesel the atmosphere??

These are questions, not statements. I hope there is some evidence that these carcinogens become harmless when exploded in a typical diesel engine but doubt it.

We all are a creative bunch. We can figure this out.

Xylene, toulene, butane and naptha (among others) are all contained in unleaded gasoline. So far, gasoline is still legal.

Its safe to assume that gasoline fumes aren't safe. When it gets burned in the cylinder, most of it becomes CO2 and water. What's left goes through the catalytic converter, which "burns" almost everything left in the exhaust.

A few years ago the air quality people made gas stations put those vapor return lines on the nozzles. I'm not sure, but I think they gave up on it because the vapor just went back into the holding tank, and (most of it) was later pushed out of the holding tank when the gas truck came by. Does anyone know what really happens?

Regardless, seems like veg is a lot better for the environment, at least before it burned. I have seen mixed results after its burned. I hope that helps answer some questions.

In an attempt to bring this discussion back on topic…

I just changed my signature to more accurately reflect what I’ve been blending with. Pardon the bastardized units but it’s the easiest way for me to measure volume.

Zooch, check the numbers, the percents appear different from the oz/litre, which seem a bit high.

I'm presently using ~0.13% to ~0.2% each of acetone and turpentine, where the percent is calculated for the total fuel volume in the tank. i.e. 4oz to 6oz each in a 90 litre tank.

That would be ounces per litre of gasoline. The % is of the total WVO/Gas/solvent blend.

I guess I could be using more solvents then…? but they are not cheap.

OK, now I see what your percents are based on. Thanks for the clarification.

When going through the math for your volumes I realized my mistake... I'm posting ratios not % (I forgot to x100). Your statement of ounces / tank is what tipped me off.

I'm actually using 4.8% turp and 2.4% acetone. That's why I thought adding more solvents would be really expensive. I could probably cut back a bit on the acetone and turpentine eh?

On the positive side, I've gone over 10,000km on this blend w/o any noticeable issues and it ran great. That said, I've always had some diesel in the main tank too because it is winter so my ratios were never quite that high.

Thanks again John.

I guess I need to change my signature again.

I'm using #1ULSD or kerosene as the solvent, and acetone and turpentine as 'performance additives'. The research I've done indicates that less than 1% of each is adequate for the fuel combustion enhancement effect we want.

I tried a tank of 5 to 1 WVO/Paint thinner (used/settled), and it seems to run as good as good as the previous WVO/RUG blend. Is anyone else using Paint Thinner?

Once these ingredients are mixed, if I was to store in a barrel for say 6-8 weeks would they seperate into layers? Would I need to re-mix before filling up my tank?
I am seriously thinking of blending rather than brewing this year.

If there is any PHO or fats in the mix, then they will separate and settle out of the mix gets cold enough, however the remaining components will stay mixed.
