Hi I appreciate the advice within this forum but there is some outstanding stuff that maybe someone can help with.
Firstly, I notice that many, if not most have used blended mixes with 'big thumpers' eg cummins diesel etc. My personal interest lies in smaller bore eg 2 litre japanese vehicles. So any comments regarding these vehicles on this thread appreciated.

Secondly, its a bit confusing with zylene/xylene; it seems to be a very useful additive, but cannot find any reference to recommended proportions used per gal or litre WVO.

Thirdly, there is talk of cetane boosting, but as far as I can tell, moth balls provide cetane boost, yet many, if not most recommend adding acetone. I have a feeling that a combination of acetone and mothballs would be detrimental to especially a Japanese engine. Comments??
Thanks kindly,
Alistair.

Modern mothballs use 1,4-dichlorobenzene. What evidence shows that this compound provides cetane boost?

What evidence shows that acetone provides cetane boost?

What evidence shows that zylene/xylene provides any benefit?

I run a 3.4L TDI Japanese diesel truck. I use less than 1% of pure gum turpentine which acts like a cetane improver, and acetone as solubility improver, surface tension reducer, and injector cleaner.

That mix is 0.45% turpentine. I use a similar amount. The turpentine makes a significant difference especially with low cetane winter diesel.

Posts within this forum iterate that mothballs which were used historically to boost performance are useful. However, no specific performance tests have been done.

Older mothballs consisted primarily of naphthalene, modern mothballs use 1,4-dichlorobenzene instead. There's no documented evidence I've seen that supports the assumption that either boosts diesel performance.

If someone has evidence, please post it.

I heard about mothballs in the 70s for gas engines to raise octane. They also burned valves and holes in pistons.
