I added some leftover ATF to my last fillup of WVO - about 1qt to 20gal oil - giving me a nice pink color in my filter! I had read that some MB owners fill the spin-on filter with ATF every time they change it. It seems to run fine - does tranny fluid "help" in any way - clean injectors, etc?

The detergent in the ATF helps clean the injectors.

What if you get stopped by DOT & they see that color? Would they think you are running dyed non-taxed off road fuel? I've never seen dyed fuel & dont know if the colors are same.

Don't know why the DOT would want to look in the tank of a 26-year old Benz with faded paint job...

Because they are TAX COLLECTORS, and that's their job!

One part-time-ranching friend of mine had a diesel Buick(?) that he ran on ag fuel. His neighbor, with the same type of car, got stopped an dye-dipped at least once per week, while my friend never got stopped. The difference? He registered it at his in-city address and had nothing identifying it as a diesel (including a dummy exhaust pipe from the gasoline model of the car).

the idea of running ATF on occasion is an old trick that really may not apply at all these days cause ATF of yester year is a whole different animal from what it is today.

I agree. ATF and oil have kinda swapped places. Oil now has more detergents, and ATF has more dispersants.

I have a SVO/WVO 2-tank conversion 1987 300D Benz, running on a tank of WATF (waste ATF) right now. It's about 80% WATF and 10% WVO and 10% diesel. (My purges are a little long and push a little diesel back into VO tank, each time.)

I have this to say about WATF in this mix..
It runs great.
No discernible loss of power.
However, I said that about WVO too.
What I did find out that WVO runs quieter than diesel. ... because it has slower combustion and there was less knocking.
So I advanced the IP timing to get an earlier burn of VO, at the cost of maybe too much advance for diesel. Now VO "sounds about" what diesel used to sound like.
I have to say that WATF burns quieter than VO, and certainly quieter than diesel.
But I'm not going to do any more IP advance for WATF, that would put diesel out of whack.

This leads me to think I don't want to burn 100% WATF.
So I will probably mix WATF with WVO 50/50.

I don't know if these blend nicely together, and burn just as well blended. But one thing I can do is a shake test and let stand in a glass jar to see how these fluids behave together if left to settle out after a little while.

Scott

Used to be off-road diesel was banned from roads because it burns dirtier from the additional sulfur. Now that they have pretty much the same standards it's more of just a taxation issue.

Lots of info on this thread.

Forget BlueTEC, YellowTEC rocks!

Some guy was probably in his parking spot.

Notice the beer in the photo? Probably had something to do with it.. just maybe.
