I know your not supposed to used galvanized pipe and I never have.

But being as someone will probably ask me during a workshop, and because black iron 3/4 in crosses are hard to find, I am trying to find out exactly why you shouldnt use galvanized pipe.

The closest answers I have gotten so far are:

-avoid galvanized pipe due to zinc content

-methanol attacks zinc in galvanized pipe, effect of this unknown.

thanks

Lowes seems to have a good supply of the black iron crosses, or at least mine does.

As for the galvy, the zinc or zinc/aluminum is just a coating over iron or mild steel. I think it is avoided for the same reasons we pull the zinc or magnesium anode. It will corrode and send zinc bits (microscopic?) into the output.

The zinc and nickel that are part of galvanization process have undesired reactions with the chemicals we use. If all you can get is galvanized, then just soak it in hydrocloric acid. Be careful about the heat output and bubbling. It will quit bubbling for 2 reasons. Either all of the acid has been neutralized, or the zinc and nickel have all been consumed. If you add fresh acid and it starts bubbling again, you need to continue.

For my personal time, money, and safety, I would go here: 3/4 Cross
