I have been making bio for about 18 months, and running from B75 down to B25. About 5 months ago I started to notice some signs that I hadn't noticed before. The truck had a tendency to cough if I didn't use some Sea Foam or another additive, also when pulling off some time it would hesitate very badly.
In my work I pull a gooseneck trailer daily that weighs about 10,000. I have over the 18 months put about 5k miles monthly, also about 3 months ago it died and we had to have it in the ford store for fuel ecausepump and 4 injectors, and of course they wouldn't honor warranty because of bio.
All of the fuel I make passes 3/27 and shakem test everytime with no problems at all. The last couple of fill ups I have ecauseused B25 and it seems to be running better, but with 200 gallons of bio just sitting there I really hate not to use more. Any suggestions would really be appreciated!!
So everyone knows my system:
heat used oil to 190 and run through shower head until it passes water test no boil
use 2 stage system run until we pass 3/27
put in another drying barrell heat to 140 run through another shower head with fan blowing, no soap.
I just don't know what is wrong is it the 6.0, or something else. I have never tried to run B100,didn't want problems on the road. I change fuel filters every time I have oil changed 10k.
thanks

I'm not noticing any wash method in you process. Did I miss that? Soaps that won't show up in the shake-em up test might be an issue. You might want to get a soap test done, or get the kit and do it yourself. I know your 6.0 is far less tolerant of 'off spec' biodiesel than my 7.3 is.

That's the only issue I might look into from what you wrote.

Just out of curiosity, do you have a bypass system on your oil filtration, and are you doing oil analysis with your 10k mile changes?

I do the 5% prewash, and then I wash at least 3 times with hot water. No bypass system, fuel filters always look normal when changed.
thanks

Are you using KOH or NAOH?

I'm thinking you should start doing soap tests. Soap seems to be a problem with 6.0 motors.

Lampman,
You may end up finding out that the 6.0 is a poorly designed POS money pit.
I friend of mine has one that has never seen a drop of bio, and has been in the shop for repairs to the fuel system on several occasions, always with a healthy bill. It's in the shop now with the bill totaling around $3500.00. His truck hasn't broken 200K miles yet.

I'm not trying to break your heart here if your in love with the truck, I appologize.
I would suspect the fule delivery system is at fault before I would your fuel. Seems to be a common problem with that engine.

Just to balance it out - My '05 6.0 has been running on B100 for over 40,000 miles without so much as a hickup. I occasionally haul a 10ton log trailer.

It is possible that the dino you are mixing with has some issues.
I would invlest in a soap test kit though to rule that possibility out.

The smell of my exhaust makes me hungry!

04 6.0 here with 40k miles of b100 also
Some of these trucks are great. Some are horrible. Mine is a good one, but I wont buy another just because its too risky to get a bad one.

I use NOAH, as I said i have been using bio fuel for about 18 months with very little problems until lately.I'm pretty simple minded but i figure if it has excess soap it should show up in the drying process. I have no suds or bubbles what so ever and as I said before we heat the bio to at least 140-160,and run through shower head for several hours.
I have run 2 tanks of dino and this morning I noticed some cough and hesitation, I noticed it when pulling off from stop sign and turning right, I know that makes no sense but that is what I noticed. Also last week it started to load up for a while, then I gave it more acc.when it cleared I looked in mirrow smoked like a Greyhound until it cleared up.
thanks

The way it will show up in the drying process if you have excess soap is after drying and sitting still for a week you will see the soap on the bottom of the barrel. Are you sucking off the bottom of the barrel when you transfer from drying to your truck? Always best to leave about six inches of fuel in the barrel.

I'm sure you would notice if the truck runs better right after a filter change. If it does I would follow that lead.

When I was water washing I used hot water and a pretty agressive wash. Then when it was time to dry it I would get soaps floating on top at times. (Sure fire indicator that there are some in there) Anyway then as now I use(d) CAT 2 micron fuel filters as a final filtration. What told me that even though I had crystal clear biodiesel and it passed the 3/27 / freezer tests that soaps were still present is that I would routinely plug up brand new filters, and with water I used two back to back to be sure that what was coming out as a finished product was quality.

Since switching to demething and resin, everything else being basically the same, I change the single 2 micron can in January as a matter of course not of necessity. I use one filter can per year instead of several pairs like before.

I use a 250 gallon tote and I don't pump from bottom, always keep pipe about 6 inches from bottom. I also try to keep about 100 gallons at all times, and every 3 or 4 months we will empty tote to see what bottom of tank looks like, usually very little residue on bottom.
Did talk to the Ford Tech today and he thought the problem is probably Egr Cooler or the valve Bio is just too good to be bad.

Talk to biogirl, Lisa. She's had problems with her 6.0 PSD. Her experience at a stealership was very bad where she was forced to buy injectors. Then finally got a good tech and fixed the problem. EGR related.

bio makers,
The problem was not in the egr valve or cooler. I had it fixed on Monday, it was the EBP sensor and connector, not related to the Bio in any way.Thought it might be helpful to others.
