Hi all!

I havn't been on this site in several years. Ill get right to the point.

I installed a Greasecar system in my 86 Golf and was running wvo most of last summer. This all ended when I went over to a friends house. The middle of the drive way was totally overgrown with weeds and bunched up und the coollant lines underneath my car. It ripped the lines from the mounts and I didn't notice until it wore a hole in my coolant lines when I got back out on the main road. Needless to say I had to stop and fill her with water ever ten minutes until I got home.

So I havn't been able to run veggie for a year and just recently I decided to take the tank out and take a look inside. I found some left over wvo but I noticed that algae had began to grow on the heater element.

I was wondering if anyone here knew how I could clean this tank out and get rid of the algae. Also should I change the filter? I only ran veggie one summer and maybe did close to 1,000 miles total. It hasn't been used all year so maybe it's a good idea.

Some of what you think is algae could be salts from a WVO reaction on the copper in-tank HE ( heat exchanger ) . You could switch to an aluminum HE or coolant heated pickup and add a FPHE (flat plate heat exchanger ) . Do some searching these forums for flat plate heat exchanger , and coolant heated pickup . The thread " tank ideas " has lots of pictures too .

To clean a greasecar tank, you just need to take the access hatch off and wipe it out. You can put some biodiesel in there to clean it IF you put a ball valve on the coolant line running to the tank and shut off the heat.

I've been doing some research on FPHE. I am a little confused as to where I would install it. Do I remove the tube HE from the inside and replace it with a FPHE? Greasecar has them for $250 including all the components.

No, you want your FPHE to be up front right before the IP for max heat prior to injection. They are not intank heaters. They exchange coolant heat directly to heat your fuel. Dudadiesel has better prices than greasecar. a 10 to 15 plate exchanger will be all you need for a tdi.

Merk,

Where could I get fittings and hoses to go with the FPHE? Local hardware? And what fittings do I need? Also where could I pick up some PEX fuel line?
