Hey guys

Gettin ready to sell the Golf. It's a 1.6 n/a with a greasecar kit. I also purchased a FPHE for it. So I just got done connecting everything and started it up. I first noticed that the amount of coolant that I replaced wasn't close to the amount that came out of the engine when draining it. However the engine idled at normal temps and coolant was being pumped. This was very odd. So I took it for a drive and it ended up using more coolant so I put more in (but not much). I felt around while the engine was running to make sure that coolant was getting to the FPHE and copper coil in the tank. FPHE was hot and so was the in and out of it. Everything else wasn't however. The copper coil wasn't hot at all.

Did I connect this up wrong? I T'd into coolant hose off the head which goes to the heater core and then comes out.

Probably you have air in the system.

Yes, air pockets can destroy a motor and the temperature gauge can show normal temps because the water isn't really circulating.

Remove the radiator cap run the motor and squeeze and release the top radiator hose until all the air is out. Some manufacturers fit a bleed valve.

This only happens in cars where the top of the radiator is lower than the water passages in the head.
