-missed your first post, if you need info on welding , you can pm me, I check my email several times a day.
-are you welding down hand or up, I always weld from the top to the bottom this takes some practice, but if you use 6011 1/8 at 110 amps, it should work well. I say 6011 because it has less flux to get in the way. do some practice piece first Tom

Well my plans to get out to the shop got cancelled tonight so it will have to wait until I return from my fishing trip anyways...

I am not sure what you mean?
The angles were at 90 degrees to the tank, I held them in place with a magnet. I held the rod at a 45 degree angle into the joint. The welding was horizontal.
The strange vibration thing may have been caused by the magnet now that I think about it...
Thanks Tom!

Well here it is completed...
Eventually I will add a 12V vac pump to the tank and move the suction hose to the top but for now I will pump it down at home...
My brackets held when I lifted it out of my shop with the loader so I guess I did alright, thanks to all the help I received here!
I would build the skids differently if I were to do it again so I could have a few more inches of clearance between the bottom valve and the ground among a few other minor things but for my first metal fabrication job I am satisfied! Smile
Thanks again,
Jon

-Now that looks like a proffesional job to me, congrats on a job well done. If you could just ship that to me Big Grin Big Grin, you could make another with wider and higher skids. Tom

ps keep an eye on that hose, wvo will make it brittle !

Another thing I have on mine is a second 1" valve so if one gets stopped up by something that shouldn't be in the barrel (or some misfortunate accident) you can switch to a different suction port.

I'll go ahead and fill you in on how I know about that one.
I was sucking up some oil in the winter one day when I noticed something had my suction line stopped up. I pulled the hose loose from the valve at the tank just for a second to see air would suck in to determine if the blockage was at the valve or in the hose. Just in that split second the little plastic grocery bag that was under the valve got sucked into the valve just as I was closing it. I closed the valve as much as possible to prevent the bag being sucked in all the way inhibiting the discharge of the tank. It only leaked a little but I was able to finish my collections for the day without blocking up the discharge thanks to the second valve.
An opportunity turned into experience.

THANKS for the kudos guys!
Its amazing the butchery you can hide with an angle grinder and a gallon of Tremclad (right over the rust!) paint. Big Grin Big Grin

DOH! Red Face I paid over $80.00 for that hose thinking it would last a lifetime, also the clear part I figured would help to see what kind of sludge I am pumping... I didn't even think WVO would have an effect on any type of plastic.
What do you guys use for a suction hose?
Thanks for the advice DD! I do have another 2" bung on the side of the tank I can put another 1-1/2" valve and quick connect on just in case I need it...

What do you guys use for a wand? I am not sure my setup is ideal but I will know for sure this weekend. I cut the down spout so it will stay about 3" off the bottom of the drum if I hang the valve on the lid...

-I use the same type of suction hose, but with green spirals. I notice after a year it needs to be replaced, having said that, wvo sits in my hase 24/7, so by keeping it drained the life expectancy my by longer. Tom

Nice looking set up Jon!

Is that hose also known as 'spa hose'? If so, is it bio compatible?

Nice job, Jon.

I just attached waterproof plywood rectangles at the feet and the top bracket, but you didn't have a top bracket.

I used a white hose that I bought at Lowe's. I think it is a spa hose. It was pricey, but has held up well for over a year. I suck from the bottom of my tank and pull vacuum at the top. I am not sure which method is best.

Thanks guys!
I did some research on my hose, its made of PVC and called Spiralite 115, It is good for "Water, light chemical solutions"... I will empty it when I am done and see how long it lasts...
I will post back here when it fails...

Jon,

Ive been using that same hose for a while. Be very careful in cold weather too. Its not very flexible. Ive had several times where the bend was just a bit too tight and I either lost my vacuum or my oil. My next hose will be Tank Truck suction hose, Pricey at $3.20 per ft. but if it lasts longer it will be worth it.

When you say "bio compatible", are you referring to biodiesel or just the veg oil? A lot of folks I talk to keep mentioning "Biodiesel compatible" but you're not sucking biodiesel.. Just veg oil.

EPDM is compatible with most veg oils. I know its not good with peanut oil. My sucker hose is EPDM and its been fine for 3 years now.

The sucker hose only needs to be WVO compatible.
Thanks for the heads up on EPDM hose.
Why is EPDM not compatible with peanut oil but fine with the rest?
Its interesting to me that the spiralite PVC hose or any robust polymer for that matter is attacked by the veg oil... I guess its the acidity of the WVO??

I don't even know what my hose is made of; its just the standard suction-side trash pump hose that was on the shelf at Farm&Fleet. Of course, its always stored empty. I can't unload the sucker from my truck full, so as soon as I get home, I blow out the WVO and unload it, otherwise I'd be hauling a full super sucker to work all week!

I also see after a quick search that EPDM suction hose is readily available! Smile

Ryan, I bet its EPDM, it seems like its the standard in the industry after doing some searching around...
