Not ALL water heater tanks can take a vacuum. This A.O. Smith 80 gal tank collapsed at -21 inches while being tested. Dave

keep on testing.. you could sell the crunched tanks as art work i bet some snob would buy it
One of my crew suggested we connect it to the air compressor to fix it.
id try it for the heck of it.. like crunching a plastic bottle then blowing air into it to reshape itself.. id just becareful
Ain't gonna happen.
why not? afraid of a little bang and some flying debri. Maybe you could call it a water heater bomb instead of pipe bomb LOL

Is that a sight tube on the collapsed tank? What is it and where did you get it?
It's acrylic. McMaster-Carr. It passed the test without cracking. Dave
HOLLLEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! that's pretty nasty. I have only vacuumed smaller tanks,i wonder if the 80 gallon aspect was the problem?
also a good candidate for the caption contest thread. looks like nice equipment by the way!
I put a vacuum on the two 40 gal tanks (blue and silver) and on the 80 gal hot water tank barely visible in the back of the photo all the time. They are all Whirlpool brand and made of thicker steel. The collapsed tank was a used one which I got for free. I cut a manway in it (it's not visible in the photo) and had to take out a plastic liner in the tank. The tank had no anode tube. The wall thickness of the tank was surprisingly thin. I guess that A. O. Smith wanted to use thinner-walled tanks to save money so they stuck in a plastic liner to give it longer life. Dave
Yes...please...can I throw that on the Biodiesel Caption Contest? Please Please?
I can only imagine the cool things folks could come up with...
"World's first rubber water heater tank?"
"Well, my mom alway's told me to vacuum my room, I was just practicing"...
One observer to the other:
"So what happened?"
"Well, I was standing there making some bio when I mentioned the word Fuelmiester around it & it did THIS!!! Guess it was trying to do a Fuelmiester imitation for me"
Yes you can put on the caption contest thread. I'm still so pissed off that the Plankton Processor will never make a drop of BD that I can find no humor in its untimely demise. Dave
Proof that making biodiesel can suck!
