Since I use caustic soda to make BD I have to be careful to flush any pumps of glycerin byproduct or it will solidify and plug the system. Previously I had installed gate value drains at the low points in my system but even a small amount of solidified glycerol will make a clearwater pump hard to start and prevent pumping. In order, to help rectify the problem I remove the pump housing
drill a hole on the lower side, tapped it with 1/8 pipe thread and attached a 2 in. nipple, 1/8 to 1/4 in. bushing and gate valve.
Now, whenever I stop the circulation following a reaction I isolate the pump circuit from the tank with another gate valve and drain both the line and the pump housing.
The same valve allows me to more completely drain the system after the water wash cycle and the transfer to the spray dry tank.

Hi Rick,

Using a mix of 2/3 NaOH and 1/3 KOH gives most of the benefits of using sodium whilst still keeping the glycerol in a liquid state.
