I'll jump in on this one on the side of the firefighters. Common sense will go a long way in the safety aspect of production. In the two decades I've spent as a firefighter there really isn't much I have seen. A BLEVE really doesen't happen that often. I seen 800 C mentioned on a post here. The circumstances that it takes simply do not exist in most structures. The only one I have ever seen is the one on the training video I saw was when a rocket fuel plant blew up out in Nevada. We looked into the possibility of the HHO tanks blowing up around here during a structure fire and simply decided that in isn't a likely scenario. We did become more concerned about people storing those little plastic gas cans in strange places though. Or maybe a little 1 lb propane torch used for plumbing.
At around 535 C, the possibility of a flashover rears its ugly head. You can read more about that here if you wish. http://www.workingfire.net/misc3.htm Far more firefighters are killed each year by flashovers than by BLEVE's. A nice gesture would be to give a detailed list and a map of storage areas to an officer of your local fire company. That way they know what they are dealing with. Our alarms plans are set up different for certain structures in our area due to this. It makes our job a little safer and we do recommend safer storage methods when we can. The springkler idea would be really bad when dealing with this. Think gas on water here. While it is possible to put out a flammable liquid fire with water, there is a very specific way to do it and it is far beyond the average person. In this situation, a foam or carbon dioxide system would be necessary. Neither is cheap. |
