Most diesel fuel cans I have used are not very good. They leak around the spout, or the spout is way to small. I also don't like to store the spout down in the fuel.

Looking for suggestions for the perfect 5 or 6 gallon fuel jug with a flexible spout that does not leak fuel on my already oily shoes.

I prefer the NATO cans, but I modified the spout, brazing on a rigid piece of large diameter tubing to replace the flexible metal tubing. Then I built a pump and quit using the spout entirely - set the can on the ground, open it, stick the suction hose in, etc. You get the picture.

The NATO cans I bought are German, with a little metal tag to indicate what sort of fuel they contain. The cheap knockoffs leak and the lining comes off. The German ones have a gasket that hasn't been effected by bidiesel in years. I bought them at a 4wd meet.

What are you refueling? Machinery in the field? Your pickup truck on trips? Your car in the driveway? There may not be a perfect single solution to all of these scenarios.

A friend uses a bunch of "dirt bike" refueling, er, bottles. Are you familiar with them? He makes it look easy to refuel - they have big nozzles, vents, and tapered sides for fast pit stops, so they drain biodiesel into his truck in seconds. They even have handles in the right places.

Cheers,

I use round 20Lt vented carboys, the type used for etching solution in print shops. The neck is 70mm and I've swapped the cap for one that has a threaded knock out plug and screwed a 3/4" hose barb into it and attached a length of braided vinyl hose. The fueling spout is kept separate from the carboys whihc are themselves kept air tight. I've stored my biodiesel this way for a longtime and used this filling method the whole time without issue.

Most of the time I would be filling a skid-steer loader or tractor. We have several transport tanks with electric pumps, but sometime it is less work to just grab a small fuel can or two.

I like this style for gasoline. They work well for small tanks on power equipment. Just tip it up and push the button to start and let go to stop. I think they would be slow dumping 5 gallons and they don't have a flexible spout. Might try one for diesel.

I use empty cubies when going on a trip. I have a cap with a 3/4 inch pipe knock out in it. leave the normal caps on the cubes when on the road. Screw the cap with the clear hose on it when you want to fuel up. throw the empty cube in the nearest trash can. Doesn't glug. The cubie collapses inside the card board holder, when about 3/4 of the cube has emptied, tip down to let air in it and finish emptying. Or you could poke a hole in the cube. too much bother IMHO.
