from what I understand common sulphuric acid aka battery acid is NOT concentrated enough, 90%. The sulphuric acid that we need to use for biodiesel is something like 98%.

- battery acid is not strong enough for the Acid Esterfication process if thats what you will be doing. You need 90% or higher concentration. I believe the lower % acid strenghts are laden with water, and that is death to the ae process. tom

Battery acid is about 36% H2SO4 by weight. The rest is water.

Alright so we now know what it is, what different names for it are. How about where to get it at a decent price? Any one?

Go to a local new automobile dealer and ask for there detail shop (where they clean up there cars). Ask where they buy there chemicals. That is where I found my contact if they don't have what you want they will probably give you a contact with the chemical company that they get there supply's from.

This is NOT weak battery acid (been there done that). It is high percentage sulfuric acid used by many (it works).
What part of this don't you understand?

You still have not said what you consider a decent price, which i asked previously and do not see a response from you on.

What are you willing to pay per gallon of high percentage sulfuric acid?

Be careful of drain cleaners that says they contain buffers these also kill the reaction also watch for key words like "safe for all plumbing". I get mine from the chemical supplier that supply's all the local detail shops. He gets it in 55 gallon drums bulk to dilute and make mag wheel cleaner and some other cleaners out of. There are chemical supply houses in about every major city. You have to do some research in the yellow pages and yellow pages.com try google chemical supply inc.your city and state then try the surrounding cities. Good Luck and DN be patient with people if you don't like the post contents it is better just to not respond than to respond with sarcasm

brentsbg did not ask how to research sources(do not take this as a shot at you).He asked if anyone knew where he could buy a couple gallons of sulfuric acid at a decent price.
Since the question is asked in the Biodiesel section i understand that it needs to be high percentage.
That question was answered with a specific Store(Ace Hardware) in the USA (roscoe,il {and my apologises if Ace is not in your area brentsbg})and the names(Rooto and Liquid Fire) on the containers so as not to confuse or mislead.(I try hard to notice details in postings).

The question was answered in the early postings(once by me),unless more sources are required.

brentsbg
What don't i understand?
Your view of a decent price.

However, as Biotom responded, did i or we misunderstand the question?

Take note : I answered your question specifically.I suggested a high percentage sulfuric acid good for biodiesel and available in gallon containers in the USA.
Is it priced within your budget? You still have not shared that,so i do not know?
It is hard to share a specific answer when there is not enough detail in the question.

Are you kidding me DN? This is just stupid. I did call 3 ace hardwares thye didnt have it. For aslong as youve been a member I wouldnt have expected such childish questions. A decent price would be one that seems reasonable to purchase, was there even one price given? No. Was there one phone number given to order? Nope. One specific location that 100% has it? Nope. SO I have no idea where you are going with this....

I am not kidding you.
I asked what $$ you view as a decent price.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Agreed, you still have not "given" your "decent" amount,>the most $$ you consider reasonable to pay<.( Where does that childish comment fit)?

Why are you expecting your fellow members to interpret your opinion of what a decent price is for the acid. How many times has that question now been asked of you? Still no $$ answer.

My local Ace sells it for $21.99 per gallon . Their phone number is 864-225-1406 if you wish to order and ship.
For only a couple gallons, $21.99 is decent to me, maybe not to you, therefore the $$ question.

***I do not live in or near rosco,il to visit the Ace stores to verify their stock items 100%.
Sorry your stores do not stock sulfuric acid in the gallon containers.
Did you ask if they will order it for you? Most will if you pay in advance?
Did you check Your Ace locations inventories before reacting to my second post?
I have offered you direction based on supplies available in South Carolina.
You too have been around this forum for awhile. I am actually suprised you even asked the question that started this thread because much of this info is available through the search function.
Note: counting the apology in my fourth posting , i have offered an apology to you at least twice during this thread.***

Moving on...

I was at a local industrial auction two years ago, while inspecting the items I would be bidding on I noticed a skid of plastic drums and went over and took a look, three were empty but one was an unopened drum of sulphuric acid, I forget the baume number but it turned out to be 98%, i asked the guy in charge of the auction about it and he said if you want it just take it, they were pretty afraid of it and had no idea what to do with it and were over joyed to be rid of it.
I'll tell you one thing though, a full drum of 98% is extremely heavy, it really made my F250 squat it has to be 800 lbs or more, since I got it I have maybe used 5-10 gallons, the sticker on the drum says it originally came from Brenntag.
