Change the fuel filter, prime the new filter with fuel , maybe crack an injector fitting to see if anything is getting to the cyls & try a shot of starting ether. make sure your glow plugs are getting hot. There are two different problems here. The stalling and no start when hot which sounds like no fuel to the injectors. And the second which might be the same as the first or no heat from the glow plugs. Bad compression will make it a bear to start. Tow starting if it is a manual is a worst case option. Check for power at the fuel shutoff solenoid when the Ign is on. Good luck

Thanks for the advice. I tried bypassing the fuel filter by sticking the fuel line in a jug of diesel and she started right up. I had thought it wouldn't be the filter since it was new, but who knows, chunk of something from the tank maybe, Ah the joys of old rusted vehicles.. jt
