Hello all,
I want to convert my Gasoline 1999 Trooper to a Diesel and want to know which Diesel engine is better - 4JG2 or 4JX1 in term of towing performance and noise and fuel economy/usage. I learned so far that 4JG2 specs is good and tends to be noisier than the 4JX1. The 4JX1 conversion requires electronic harness to control the injection pump, and is less noisy but has two major flaws with factory recalls (seen in some people's Trooper)- injector liners /loss of fuel into engine AND Delayed starting. Please feel free to advise me on your experiences and other information with either engines so that I can better select the engne for my Trooper. Thank you, Harris

Hi
Converting it to diesel is a big job and unless you love it and already have an engine and a good workshop I wouldnt do it. Better to trade it in on a diesel one.
Which one, I would go for the 4JG2 as it will be more forgiving and tolerant of things like cold oil than the later electronic wizz bang model. I have one and am happy with it. Would be nice to have the more powerful 4JX1 but I am waiting for someone else to do it first.

Johnno (great name, BTW): sad to say, Troopers aren't available here in the USA with diesel engines (except 1986/7). Engines can be imported though, so I suspect Harris probably wants advice which one is best to bring in.

That being said, converting IS a big job, even using all factory parts. It might even be worth importing a complete wrecked Trooper - which can be done legally (with some effort) as long as it cannot be made into a running vehicle. That way you get all the bits and pieces.

Hello, I have found a great web site for all Isuzu Trooper owners - http://www.itocuk.co.uk Here there are great information on Isuzu recalls on engine 4JX1 etc. I like my Trooper which, I believe, an underated value vehicle due its engine shortcoming, and which I am leaning toward converting with an Isuzu Diesel engine 4JX1. I have learned much from the mentioned website the problems associated with the 4JX1 and how to make it a more reliable engine. cheers, Harris
