Tim;
I've just gone through some copy/post collection I did on this project and I have a question. By the way we started building our furnace today using tilling disks from the early 1900's and an old water heater that leaked.
Anyway, my question: I understand that the oil feed follows the air intake down to the edge (5" above the upper bowl surface)and then drips into the upper bowl, but how does the oil get to the lower bowl ?

I also noted that tim went to a larger are tranfer tube between the bowls!! i am going to swedge a 2" piece of stainless pipe into a funnel shape to hopefully increase the air speed to the lower bowl!! I will have no base test for this so I guess that will be my base.. Tigman

Pump -- Still looking for the perfect pump, but this will do for now.

Tilling disks -- I have used an 18 inch one of these for the base on my other syphon style gun burner unit, these disks are HARD - don't even try drilling through one, even after heating the area red hot a couple of times, I finally heated the area where I needed the hole to a red heat and used several tapered punches to punch the holes, then ground away the funnel shaped excess metal, red heated again and banged into shape. I used an angle gringer to cut out the large 5 inch diameter hole for the burner unit, that worked OK.
These are also difficcult to weld things to, due to the high carbon content of the disk alloy the weld has a tendancy to crack away from the base metal unless you use a "low hydrogen" rod, I used 7018 stick welding rod successfully.

Lower bowl fuel feed -- Yep, leaky fuel shoot sticks up at about a 30 degree angle out over the opening of the air tube passageway.

Larger diameter air passage tube -- This is all still in testing, the larger diameter seems to be working fine, only thing I notice different is that the fire does not "roar" as loud as it did but this may also have something to do with the new 3 1/2 inch distance between the bowls now ? let us know how your tapered passage works.

Tigman -- Looking good - I suspect all them tiny pieces took some time.

I moved the air inlet tube down about an inch closer to the top burner, measures 4 inches now. This brought the "roar" back up the about the same as with the original upper burner bowl but it did not seem to change the amount of heat or smoke. The flame does now touch the air tube ocasionaly, this leaves some soot on the outside of the tube. Being closer to the flame likely also heats the tube more, this will eventually cause more deterioration so I will raise the tube back to 5 inches, the roar gets annoying after a couple hours anyway.
