This is motor oil burning on low fire.

The flame is about 8 inches tall after it leaves the burn tube and enters the combustion chamber.

I can get it to about 18 inches if I kick up the settings.

Having oxygen linked to a fuel molecule doesn't necessarily make it burn better.

Think of one fuel which burns really well - Hydrogen.

Now add an oxygen to it to make a molecule with 33% oxygen.

Better or worse burn properties?

That's exactly what I am planning on doing.. I'll be selling both completed units and just the plans/drawings for them.

Completed unit is $2500 (although I'm re-considering that price)

Not sure how to price the plans..

I'm not ready to offer it up yet.. I'm still working out a few bugs.. I want to make sure when I advertise its features, I'm not stretching any truths.

Any suggestions on the price for the plans? There are quite a few parts that have to be made for it.. I was thinking about how I would offer the drawings, and instructions and what I would have to do to make them readable by the average person.. There are a few specialty parts that I thought I might include in the package also..

when you get the plans ready I'm willing to do a beta. Big Grin

Comments?

Very clear. However... If you are not much of a fabricator ie me, You start to think... "How do I make sure my vertical reference line is parallel to the sides of the tank?" "How do I draw line three around the circumference of the tank?" Depends if you are giving clear instructions to a skilled fabricator or telling someone who would like a burner but has little fabrication experience.

This is NOT a project for an unskilled person who is not used to working with this type of thing.

However, the instructions do tell how to draw the line anyhow. I made sure to point out that most 100 lb propane tanks have a weld all the way around the middle and that a flexable plastic ruler would help.. I thought of that !

But like I said, an inexperienced person who was tasked to their limit building an appleseed is not going to be able to do this. It requires welding.. lots of it..

I can weld things so they stick together strongly. Got a big mig. Gas tight seam welds are still beyond me though.

I'm not being critical. Just giving you truthful feedback. Things you might take for granted I might not know already. But could do if I knew how.

I think your plans will probably be the best thing anyone has drawn up on a homebrew project for a long time.

I don't think pipe wraps work very well on larger diameter objects. I have one but never had much luck with anything larger than 8 inches.. Mine is only about 2.5 inches wide.. I think for anything larger than 8 inches would require a 4 or 5 inch wrap to get it close..

I don't trust them..

I don't take criticism hard.. I use it constructively to improve.. Believe me, I'm my own biggest critic..

As for welding skills, average skills will be fine.. however, I'll be happy to teach anyone willing to travel to me how to weld like a pro.

I always tell people who want to learn that I can teach a retarded blind monkey to weld. Its not hard to learn if you have someone else with a mask watching what you're doing.

The plans are finished.. drawings and instructions all complete.. They would have been available Friday but wife got sick on me so she didn't get the re-format finished.

I'm hoping for the weekend or Monday at the latest.

The large ones that fitters use on big stuff are around 7 feet long and 10 inches wide, I usually shear a piece of 28 gauge galvanized about 10 inches wide wrap it and line up the lap and you are perfectly straight, anybody can buy a roll of 28 gauge galnvanized or aluminum flashing at lowes etc, and do the same thing.

It is true that any monkey can learn to weld with a mig, but, making pressure and liquid tight welds is an animal of another color.

While I definitely agree that liquid and pressure tight welds are more difficult, its not a giant step.

In my experience, I've seen only two kinds of welders.. Those who can barely weld, and those who can weld very well.

The folks who can barely weld are those who have never had any formal instruction or supervision.. these are people who usually buy a welder, turn it on, and adjust the controls until they can make two pieces of steel stick together. Their welds are usually messy looking, very bumpy and not very strong.

Anyone who can carry a bead can weld a pressurized vessel if they just follow a few preparation techniques (IE: beveling weld edges to make room for double passes and things).

To adjust your euphemism, I would call it a different shade not a whole different color.

Generally, I do agree with you.

Get a can of crack check dye, spray it on and it will find any holes, grind down reweld and recheck, it washes off with soap and water.
