I have converted my Hot water heater and furnace over to burn B100. I would like to mix filtered WVO with the B100 to save on methanol and processing time. The tanks will be inside in my bsmt. I know you can mix 20% WVO with HHO, will this work with B100?

Also, I am planning using 2 tanks 1 for B100 and 1 for the WVO. Do you think using ball valves to control the ratio and sending to a common line would be sufficient for mixing the 2, or would I need to blend them better?

Thanks!
Sean

This is a good question. I was considering the same thing.

Anybody have some info?

Bump.

Thanks!

I'm a rookie, so take this for what its worth.

I recall reading somewhere that it was not recommended, but that was on the subject of fueling a vehicle. If memory serves me right, someone warned of the potential of being some left over chemicals in the B100 and it reacting with the WVO and producing glycerin.

I'm still building my reactor...but its main purpose will be for home heating fuel. My plan was to keep it simple and just make everything into B100. But, the option of mixing to save is interesting. I'd be interested to know how much would actually be saved by doing this. I'm sure labor time plays a bigger role than chemical cost (at least for me in my situation.) I'm building a big 250 gallon reactor so I'm spending less time per gallon.

Thanks for the input Curdy.

Hmmm...left over chemicals.

I was also considering not washing the BD I would use for heating (NEVER would do that in an engine).

I'm using KOH, so the glycerine wouldn't harden, so wonder what the downside would be, especially if only a minimal amount could happen?

Do you have a link to the discussion?

FYI. I haven't used any for heating yet. I'm waiting on the new tank.

I've also been reading up on "blending" WVO. for heating...

The biggest problem with oil burning appliances is the build up of soot fowling the igniters and combustion chamber and the nozzle clogging. I would think that glycerin and other foreign matter would contribute to this problem and I would want to make sure, for my burner that the fuel was as high a quality as the stuff going into my truck, If my house freezes it will cost me more than a new injector pump for my truck!!
This is only my opinion!

That's interesting about the WVO reacting with the BD and producing glycerine. I installed drains in the bottom of my my tanks to monitor the fuel before it goes thru the filter. If glycerine were to be made it would sink and I could drain it before the filter and the furnace. Personally I now have some logistical tank issues to deal with before I can try it, as I am using the tank also for my vehicles and I don't want to try the WVO/BD mix and risk it gelling in my vehicles now. My other tank has winter mix in it for my vehicles and I don;t wanna burn that in my furnace and waste the K-1 that I already paid for. Long story. I guess I could make up a test batch in a separate tank just to try, but not sure if I will have the time. Thanks! Sean

Rather than adding WVO to BD.... why not just make under-reacted BD. I mean, instead of 5gr NaOH + titration, use 2-3gr + titration. instead of 20-22% methanol, use 15%. That'll save on chemicals, and will certainly leave some wvo in the mix. Just a thought.

I think that is one of the concerns, that the extra WVO will separate and drop to the bottom.

My draw lines are at the bottom of my tanks anyways, so I'm thinking anything that does settle out should get drawn out, hopefully before it builds up too much...

I'll be hooking up my BD to my furnace soon.

Thanks for the suggestion of making under reacted BD, but the goal is to eliminate any processing other than filtering. This would also help in the colder months when processing becomes very tedious for me. Also a little concerned about burning something other than BD or WVO, which are proven. Thanks! Sean

I've hooked up my furnace for B100 today and made a trap because of some of the concerns mentioned above.
