Reason I'm asking is lately I've been trying to clean up a bit around here and put some oil into storage that's been accumulating.
Some of the drums have alot of water in them. My typical oil has around 1-2% H2O and goes into the recirculating spray dryer, 6 hours or so and it's down to .1-.3% H2O.
The latest drum I put into the dryer has alot of PHO and 11.5% H2O. Since it was already in the dryer, I figured I'd give it a go. After 48hrs it was down to 8.3%. I think it would have dried quicker had there not been a thick foamy head that developed on top of the oil limiting air circulation. I've heated, settled over night, and drained the drum twice now, draining a total of about 3.5gallons of batter/water/oil. The H2O is now down to 1.4%. Spraying from here should do it.
I have several of other drums to go before winter.
Any ideas on a good point to settle and drain as opposed to spray drying?

So drum #2 and some various cubies went into the spray drier yesterday evening 7:00ish at 5.8% H2O. Heated to 140F then let settle for 2 hours, drained ~1.5G then heated and sprayed all night.
This morning 10:00ish there was an undetectible water level (using WHW to 260F) RH around 75%, there was also no foamy head developed on this batch.

40 gallons oil went into the spray dryer last night before bed time from various cubies, both soy and PHO.
Starting H2O was .3%, sprayed over night with no heat, just a fan. This morning there was no detectible H2O in a 450g sample brought to 240F. To be expected at such a low starting %.
I have one more full drum to throw in there that has alot of H2O. I'll try to dry that one this week.

Hi,
I've been following along.
I'm no expert, but if this is to become biodiesel, my way of saving time and energy is to mix in 20% raw glycerin for an hour and settle overnight.

I do this per batch, not for storage.

Brian,
I'm avoiding the Glycerine pretreat cause I may have to acid/base this oil since it's from several different drums that have been sitting for up to two years. Until I fill a tote, I'm not sure how acidic it is.

Raining here so I just put the wet drum of oil through my cold upflow barrels. I think that's it for the wet old stuff around here. If I get anymore I'll see what I can find out.
