Do you usually use 20% methanol?
Possibly you may want to increase your methanol to 22% in future processes...push the reaction. As for this batch....sorry, never seen anything like it. You know you could try heating a liter Slowly to 60-70 Degrees centi-...see if it clarifies it at all?? ~c |

Well, I'll let others tell you how to break the emulsion as there are several methods but I just drain it into buckets and let it sit and break on it's own but that can take quite some time.
I would suggest mist washing with hot water for your first few washes, I have never had much luck with using only bubble washing. Before mist washing I would just let the bd sit on top of some hot water for two hours. |

Where in UK are you sticknberries?
Anyway, best suggestion i can make is to put that batch aside, make a new batch and mix the glycerol from it into your cloudy batch. It should clear right away. PS - try using Graham Lamming's 5% prewash method if your doing water washes. |

sticknberries,
I'm in USA, Ky. I did have some oil like that once, I was experimenting with a liter of WVO, trying to H2O wash it, wanted to see if I could filter the crud out prior to processing. I aggressively shook it, then let it sit and settle. After 3 days I still had "chicken soup". I then threw it out, but it was only 1 L. Are you positive your titration was accurate? Did you titrate once, or more? (I usually titrate 3 times, add my #'s and divide by 3) I would increase future batches to 22% methanol. With that much "soup", I would x-periment with a Liter, reprocess, or wash with gly. and see what happens. Please keep us informed, sounds like an interesting (and unwanted) situation. Resolution could provide us all with some great info......GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!! ~c |

I have one of those drums. It's an open top drum with the same kind of locking ring. It has a 3/4" and a 2" bung in the lid as well. It was originally a Mobil grease drum. I got it from a truck garage. Ken |

You could try sprinkling some salt into it. Ken |

has happened to me twice now. I think this is an emulsion. the first time i am sure i over agitated during the first bubble wash, the second time I may have have set the timer to 6 hours instead of 3 for the first bubble wash not sure though. I drained and let sit for a month or so, got to recover 1/2 to 3/4 the rest seemed like thick white soap. I static wash for a day or so with hot water, then I bubble wash for three hours and let sit for a day, then i usually do three more 6 hour bubble washes, with hot water. I let it settle for a long time between wash cycles, takes about 5 days to complete a batch. takes a long time but i have had very little issues. make sure your not over agitating. what are you using for your bubbler. folks here pointed me to mcmaster carr website for a stainless air bubbler - great results with that

This is what I would reccommend. I have had good success in the past with a couple small emulsions. It works really fast. Try it in a 2 liter bottle if you don't believe me. |
