Locally, I can make biodiesel for about one US dollar per gallon.
The last drum of methanol I purchased cost $180 for 55 US gallons. For 100 liters of waste vegetable oil, I use 22 liters of methanol. Some of that I can recover by distilling it from the byproduct. This does not count the cost of the wvo, which if often not free any more, the labor, which is substantial, the kerosene I have to use to treat the biodiesel so I can use it at temperatures below freezing, the risk of burning my shop down, etc etc etc. Commercially made biodiesel costs about triple that amount to make. In central Canada I can buy methanol for about $140 (~$US 125)for 205 Litres (55 US gal) or ~ $0.68/litre. Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH)goes for about $2.60/kg ($1.05/lb). Based on this and free WVO, I can make my BD using 22% methanol for ~ $0.17 / litre (~$US 0.58/US gal) My electricity is quite cheap at $0.06 Kw, but I likely use $1 to $2 per batch, which could be a factor in your choice of process if electicity is expensive.
