Once the mixing process is complete in an appleseed type processor, is it possible to move the mix into a cone bottom poly tank for settling so that the glycerine can be drained off more completely? or is this not advisable?

Certainly, and its exactly what I do. It frees up the processor to start the next batch then, too, while the glycerin settles.

Ok, well, then I will purchase a cone bottom tank for the separation phase Thank you Ryan, any other advice would be greatly appreciated, I'm going to begin construction on a 300 ltr system in July from the plans on Graydon's website.

I've used a seperate settling tank for a few years now and that is definetly the way to go, but why not just use a food grade drum equipped with a standpipe ? Cheaper than a poly tank and safer too.
You can view my system linked in my sig line.

Like that idea much better than an expspensive cone bottom option I can easily make two of those for the price of one 100 gallon cone bottom. Also, like your methanol recovery vessel plans, I think I will add that to my to-do list!! Thanks for the advice Legal!

I use one of those inverted 55 gallon drums for a settling/wash. It cost me five bucks. I have a 2" stand pipe in the barrel on the plumbing that goes to the drying barrel.

Since I double batch before I wash, I have the option of settling in the processor or settling in the settling/wash tank. Generally I move one batch over to the settling tank and refill my processor immediately for the next batch. My processor has a 40 gallon capacity, so I do 86 liter batches. This works well for a couple of reasons. One, I can get all the methanol in one carboy and two, two batches fit up within a few inches of the 55 gallon settling/wash tank. ( that is provided I have already drained off the glycerine from the first batch, otherwise I would run over). When I let the second batch settle I have just the head room I need for my static/stir/garden hose blasting style of washing.

I know this is more info than you asked for, but there you go...

Mike..
