Dear Tilly
How do I titrate my oil as your method with Phenolpthalein powder (not liquid as you mentioned)?
Thanks & regards
Hung

Hello biodiselven.

Mix a couple grams of Phenolphthalein into 100ml of ethanol/isopropynol

Ok, This is fairly standard.

What's the easiest/best way to titrate after the acid step? If I keep the acid/MeOH in, I'll have to add extra base to neutralize the acid that was added to esterify the ffas, right?

Thanks,

billybob

Hello billybob
I am not sure why someone else has not helped you with this question so here is the answer.
The best method of titrating is to use the World Famous Chopstick Titration technique (Pat Pend) which is located on this forum.
The H2SO4 used in the Acid stage as well as any remaining FFA's and other possible water soluable acids are detected during the titration.
The H2SO4 need not be considered further.

If you used 10% methanol in the acid stage, just mix your NaOH/KOH into the other 10% methanol for the base stage using the formula 5gNaOH+ titration or 7g KOH (adjusted for purity)+ titration per litre of oil in the reactor.

Considering some of the recent posts, I think you are correct about your other observation.

There are very few chemists around here craigl.
I don't know what your concern is.
Of course you handle chemicals and that means: be CAREFUL
In titration you only handle very small amounts.

As Tilly said: the reading is more difficult than the doing.
I suggest you just try it at your own pace.
There is nothing to be afraid of if you are careful and (in the case of titration) precise.

There is a getting-used-to factor, but that doesn't take long.

Craig,
Nothing to be scared of, it's a simple process. Here is a video I put up on Youtube of a titration. HTH Smile

Great vid, Joe_M. Very informative and good explanations too. Made titration look easy enough as it should be.

Just wanna ask if it follows the same measurements if you use turmeric instead?

Hello skeller

Yes, it uses the same measurements. The only difference is that you titrate to the darkest colour when using turmeric.
It is explained in the first post in this thread.
