I'm about to prepare my very first batch by the Tilly method, but the super accurate scale which I have available to weigh out the lye is the one I use for reloading ammunition for hunting and target shooting, and it is calibrated in the ancient scale of "grains" used for centuries in the sports related to firearms. There are 7000 grains in a pound (437.5 grains in an ounce), so am I correct in multiplying 7000 times 2.2 and then dividing by 1000 to conclude that there are 15.4 grains per gram?

I have plenty of used peanut oil available from a local seafood place where our department (Classical Languages) holds a luncheon meeting every 2 weeks or so, and many other restaurants in southeastern Virginia are just crying for a more reliable waste oil collection company.

Life is like a beaver colony: one dam problem after another.

...are what I started off with too
One minor detail though...be careful of the effect of lye on the surface of the measuring pan...mine was a nicely anodised gold. Now its got etched spots through to the metal...Pity.

To avoid damage to my "good" scale, place a dish in it that the lye will be measured into. You just have to weigh the dish first, then subtract it's weight from your final measurement.

Digital scales (some or all, I can only speak for the few I've seen) have a "tare" feature that allows you to compensate for the weight of a container.

I bought a digital mail/letter scale that weighs in grams and ounces. I think it came from Office max. You might want to check any office supply for cheap/inexpensive scales. Big Grin
