While i was running a 35 gal batch in my appleseed this past weekend i had the thought...Does each portion of methanol (mixing in carboys) need to contain 1/2 the required lye? Or is it possible to put all the lye in one carboy and just add the additional methanol straight?

So i tried this method...and it seemed to work at the time...but after settling and the 3/27 test...it was a no go.

I took 12 liters of the reacted oil and reprocessed in my smaller processor with 5 g/L KOH and 1 L methanol.

After letting that mix for about 20 minutes and adding 5% prewash i got about 2 liters of GLY to settle out.

I guess my question is...Was my line of thinking way off (it obviously was)...should it have worked.

Im going to reprocess the whole batch and see if i get the same results.

Hello Jon

The "Standard" reprocess is 1g NaoH/1.4g KOH mixed into 50ml methanol per litre of washed and dried biodiesel and 1g NaOH/ 1.4g KOH mixed into about 35ml methanol for unwashed biodiesel.

In theory the concentrated methoxide should be added second, to the initial mix of oil and straight methanol. This is to avoid exposing parts of the oil to excessive lye concentration, which would locally over-react some of the oil, reducing yield and increasing soap. The methanol needs to be present when the NaOH/KOH-hydroxide meets the oil. This is also the theory that indicates it is "better" to slowly add methoxide over a period of time, allowing the concentration to gradually approach the ideal level, without overshooting locally.
In practice it may make less difference because batch mixing operations are never homogeneous until they've run for a while (bad for us), and the reaction isn't instantaneous (good for us). When I do batches, I add the methoxide all in one go, with quite good results, but it's still got 20% methanol.

Thanks johno, That was what i was looking for.

So if i mix all the lye in one carboy then it should be added after the straight methanol.

Well... the reprocessing of 40 gallons of fuel went good today.

It now passes the 3/27.

I find it really difficult to see the GLY and BD layers after reprocessing...they are almost the same color. Any tips on making separation easier?
