There are two methods:
1. mechanical press a. hot press b. cold press 2. chemical solvent extraction Method 2 removes more oil, but leaves the seed hulls as mostly worthless for anything other than fertilizer. Method 1 leaves a few percent of the oil behind in the seed hulls, which all together remain as a pressed seed cake. Pressed seed cake from sunflower, safflower, canola (mustard, rapeseed & soy are valuable as an animal feed. A hot press may remove so much oil and use enough heat that again the seed cake is worthless for anything but fertilizer. Coming from an agricultural background, I prefer the cold press method. Google for 'oilseed expeller' and you'll find all kinds of things. This is one area where there is actually some good information at journeytoforever: http://journeytoforever.org/biofuel_supply.html#Oilpress |
