All I seem to be able to find is phenol red at the local stores. I know the ranges are slightly different (6.8-8.2 for phenol red and 8-10 for phenolphthalein) could this pose a problem?

From what I understand you need to have the wvo in the 8-9 range and is seems like phenol red would be pushing this to the limit. So would this also affect its accuracy? What would be the "ideal" ph to have the wvo at? 8.5??

Do I really need to try to hunt down phenolphthalein or should I just get the phenol red and hope for the best what's the worst that could happen.

Any advice would be great! Wink

Phenol red is most accurate at a pH of 7.5 where it goes orange. But if you add caustic till it goes red rather than orange you will be at pH 8 which seems to be good enough. Make sure it is a lasting red and doesn't fade quickly. If it is fading it means the reaction hasn't finished and more caustic is needed.
