I just made a small trial batch of BD using used Fry-On (one of my sources recently switched to this stuff from peanut oil). The test batch has good glycerin drop out, but is hazy even after airing it out a bit.

Has anyone had experience and/or success making BD out of Fry-On? Any thoughts on what I should look for in the hazy trial batch that might indicate useable BD?

Thanks!

Fry-On is a vegetable oil blend with hydrogenation. One of my sources used to use peanut oil, but recently switched to Fry-On. They claim that they did it due to peanut allergy prevelance. After reading about Fry-On, this oil seems to last longer with less flavor transference (but I imagine this stuff is worse to consume than peanut oil).

Here is a link to Sysco explaining their product:

If it's hydrogenated, it will most likely produce biodiesel that clouds and gells at a warmer temperature than the unhydrogenated wvo. If you live in Texas or the Bahamas, that's not a concern. If you live in Minnesota, that could be a big deal this winter. A freezer test would be interesting.

There shouldn't really be any reason it won't convert well and wash up ok if you're using the appropriate amounts of reactants.

Good luck and have fun!

I use fry on. It makes good bio. Nice and clear after wash and dry.

I have had it down to 35F for sure maybe a little less and no gelling. I usually take a sample of my current batch, and during cold weather I let it sit outside to check for gelling. Can't tell you exactly how low it will go, but 35 is a safe number straight. Kevin

Thanks Troy, kd460, and Bio Bloke for the input... I've processed a big batch and it has cracked well...good glycerine drop out. I will start washing it in the coming days and will post here with results.

Fry on works fine but I try to use oil that stays liquid down to 30ish. What you start out with is indicitive of what you will end up with. I try to get my accounts to switch to Asoya, the new low linoleic, no trans fat oil. Sysco carries it and it is the absolute best oil for frying and for Bio-D.

Thanks for mentioning Asoya TDISteve, I'm going to bring it up to my people as a possible alternative.

I just finished up washing and drying my first full drum of Fry-On BD! The hazyness that I witnessed in my trial batches did go away. Didn't wash too much either (put 40 gallons of water through approx 40 gallons of BD). The BD looks good and the pH is 7.1...I'll do a freezer test tomorrow and will post what I come up with (although my BD peoples out there have probably already done this).

Thanks again TDISteve
