I'm not sure if you consider this a snide comment or not but before I fill a barrel that I know will sit a long time I put some biocide in it. No nasty suprise later.

Not snide at all, biocide?. What kind , what brand?.Also what do you consider, a long time?.As for the snide remark,I was just voicing an opinion about a comment that wasn't nessesary, it was unusual for this forum to see comment like that.

I store my wvo in a tote, and some in barrels. The tote may go for several months before i get to using it. I added a 2 inch pvc pipe about 6 inches with 2 90's and a screen on the bottom. This vents the tote and keeps condensation from being a problem. The barrels have a top setting on them to keep out rain and bugs and leaves. Just make sure not to put any gunk in your storage, a small amount of water will settle to the bottom.
All the barrels and tote set in the sun and i never put wet oil in the tote, i pull the dry oil out of the barrels and either use it or store in the tote, the stuff from the bottom gets dried and used at a later time. Welcome to the forums, and if ya got a question, search or ask, that's how ya learn. Jammer |

I saw on another post about puting CO2 blanket in the void of the tank to cut down on bacteria growth? for long term storage. What about running a hose from the tail pipe of the car. wouldn't that scavenge the O2.

The biocide I used came from a marine supply store and it was to be put in diesel tanks. I suggest you get a bottle from Graydon, I think it is called Killem. I used to have some serious bio growth in oil that would sit for a few months but never had it again after I started treating it. It really depends on the quality of the WVO you are storing.

I have some oil that is 1 to 2 years old. Some of it is now like sludge, but to my suprise, heating it brings it back ok and makes just as good of biodiesel as the newer stuff. Just takes longer to strain it and it is little messier work.

The vent is simply a 6 inch piece of pvc screwed into the lid or cap on top, it is threaded and will fit with the correct fitting. The 2 90 degree fittings turn it down to keep water/snow out,and the screen keeps critters out.
Very simple but it does the job. |

I wouldn't get too upset if you occasionally come across the kind of remark you mentioned at the top of this thread.
But the person who responded with that short but to the point comment has a point. Often you get the 'how do I make biodiesel' kind of question. Now there are hundreds of pages here devoted to exactly that proccess. The question shows that the poster simply hasn't bothered to look at any of the thread headings and wants someone to go through describing(yet again)the proccess involved. This can get annoying after a while. While every newbie will find things a bit confusing at first, this is no excuse for not reading up on the knowledge already here. Then coming back with a more specific question. The guy who responded rather curtly was probably simply frustrated at the repetition. I've given up answering these basic questions and let someone else do it. regards dva |

The drier the WVO the better. If you can do a little when it comes in in the way of filtering and drying, it should help reduce the possibility of Bacterial growth. Filtering to remove food particles that hold moisture and drying to reduce the free water.
Water+light (in WVO or Diesel or BD) = Bacterial growth. Treating with a biocide does help as well. I have stored BD inside in a garage space that stays nice year round for upwards of 6 months. No problems. You can smell BD that has been stored too long, hard to explain the smell but you will know it if you smell it. I had used some 5 gallon cans and a year later I get the cans out for another trip and they had the odor I am speaking of. Just rinsed them out with fresh BD and carried on. Keep an eye on your stores, if you suspect its going bad use it. Maybe set up a rotation system to keep your stores turned over and if you get to far ahead, offer the oil to someone that can use it. I have done that several times and in the end, the deed has always been returned. Oops, I think I might be in trouble. I bought a tote, and filled it about a month-5 weeks ago. So far, no nasty odor or anything, but I was wondering if the biocide can be put in after the oil's already been sitting for a while.
Also, trtmntdude, do your pvc pipes go all the way down into your tote? I assume not. Cool setup, BTW-I'm trying to get to something like that myself! |
