I found bulk KOH on the alibaba.com global trade website. They have 180 tons of it in drums with no minimum purchase requirement. They say some of the drums are rusty and some of the product may be caked. Is caked KOH useless or can it be dried out? I haven't tried to contact them yet.

If the KOH has been exposed to the air it will absorb both water and carbon dioxide which will render it useless. The water will interfere with the proper formation of the methoxide. It has been reported that the potassium carbonate is ineffective as well. I do know if adding additional KOH can overcome the contamination but I live near enough so I'll give them a call, hopefully get a sample and run some test batches. Thanks for the tip, will report results.

That would be great if you could personally check out the product. My brother lives NW of Philiadelphia and maybe he'd take a run up there for me. He's gearing up to make biodiesel too so he knows what a great deal this could be. He has a utility trailer so I could possibly talk him into hauling a pickup load of drums to his place for me to pick up later and a trailer load for himself. One 55 gallon drum of lye would last me quite a long time so I'd offer the other drums to the Atlanta co-op at cost. I'm sure he would do the same thing in his area.

It used to be available at the performance/racing shop (Don's Speed Shop or somethign like that?) in Tucson. Probably still is.

Univar has the same product for around 30 bux a 50lb bag, but they have a $100 minimum will call order.

Bandimere Speedway has methanol, $2.60/gallon for gallon lots (bring your own container), Approximately 30 cents cheaper if you get 55 gallons (bring your own container).
