Got a quick question, i recently picked up oil from my supplier and the oil that was previously titrating at .4-2.0 is titrating at 21+. Oil sample was taken while oil was being dried, not a lot of water in it, very little bubbling from heater element, and heated sample seperated very little oil.

Now the question.... can i use the stuff? it is canola oil. and i don't want to discard it if i don't have to. any suggestions

is acid/base my only option? if so what is the process, and does it have to be done in the appleseed or can i do it in my drying barrels? What type and amount of acid do I need to use?

thanks for the info

I certainly am no expert on high titrating oil, but, on these forums there is an acid esterfication section.

question - have you double triple checked this titration?

If you want decent yield you will need to use the acid/base process. Please note that it is critical to completely dewater your oil prior to doing this as it will directly impact how effective the acid stage is and/or the added cost (based on the amount of 94%+ pure H2S04 that will be required).

If you do not care about yield, then you can do a base stripping step where essentially you take a base and mix it in with your batch and convert FFA's to soap. This will reduce your yield but it is easier and probably cheaper than doing acid/base.
