Biodiesel that measures PH must have some level of contamination. Maybe you have left over Methanol in your BD that is attracting water.

I love the Magnesol wash. I have made my wash tank into another reactor and now I have double the capacity. No water wash... Yeah!!!

Hi guys,
I'm new to this forum but I'm making biodiesel for myself for nearly one year. While browsing Internet I came upon this product? named Magnidon: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Magnidon-Never-wash-Bio-Diesel-ag...Z26224QQcmdZViewItem They claim it is enough 5 kilograms to wash 5000 litres og biodiesel, so I calculated - it is around 2 cents per liter! Did anyone hear or try that? According to manufacturer description it is magnesium silicate with "activated bleaching earth". |

Sounds like a Magnesol like product that they are overstating the effectiveness on. A gram or two per liter when applied right after draining out the glycerin, right.
That works out to .22% by weight. Unless they are including some steps to reduce the soap before you apply, this will not work. However, if they are advocating doing a 5% prewash, followed by some spray drying to remove the prewash water and the residual methanol, then running the biodiesel through a filter to catch the soap that falls out, you could get close to those numbers. I am down to .45% by weight and I still have a few tricks left to try. That works out to 6-7 cents per gallon, including reasonable shipping. 8.4 or so cents per gallon if you live somewhere unreasonable, like the west coast. One last comment, 5 microns? Are you crazy? 1 micron with an absolute rated filter. -Jim www dot FryerPower dot com 1987 300DT (The sedan, not the wagon.) Some modifications to the fuel system. 1995 S350D Unmodified fuel system. We are manufacturer of magnesium silicate, it contains no cyrstal form of magnesium silicate, and it worked as adsorbent for biodiesel and oil filter, please feel free to contact with me by email if you need this material.

How much is this magnesium silicate stuff and where can I get it at in oklahoma?
Diff, Could you explain the process once again..ie... 2% by weight (how do come up with this) when do you add the magnesium silicate and how long do you mix with it and then what do you do with it when you drain the glycerin off? |

Waterless processing seems to be the Holy Grail of small scale BioDiesel producers.
I've been doing some experimenting with 100 liter batches with settling for a minimum of 8 hours in the reactor in every case. First I tried water washing, then hot water washing. Both proved slow and messy, and took 5 or more water changes, with the BioDiesel still cloudy after that. I filtered all batches through cellulose filters (Frantz toilet paper filters), with the result that the BioDiesel came out sparkling and transparent. There was water trapped in the filter as evidenced by cracks in the business end of the roll of TP along with a slimy material (maybe wet soap?). Several filter changes were required to process 100 liters. I then tried hot filtering, after aggressive airation then settling to drain off any residue (no water), with a result that was similar, the Bio was sparkling clear. There was no evidence of water in the filter, but it clogged up with slimy material. Fewer filter changes were required. Extended settling of a sample produced a very thin (2 or 3 MM) of cloudy material on the bottom of the sample jar. A gentle shake made it disappear. Lastly I tried the preceeding, but added a product called "Permafil". This settled out with a bit of residual glycerine, and hopefully soap. In any case it was quite slimy. The end result I've had sitting in a jar for a few days with no sign yet of anything separating out. |

Does anybody have a recommended filter setup, I will be using an Appleseed Reactor. And an actual list of steps for using magnesol.
Thanks, Cue Cue |

Hi Jim, Let me please comment on your post. It is not a magnesol like product. And we're of the few in this market known for not overadvertising. It's activated magnesiumaluminiumsilicate. Of course if you use a lot of catalyst introducing water in the process you will need more Magnidon. I'm including tests from Bulgarian biodiesel manufacturer Pinus Tki who tested Magnidon on two oils. Batch no. 699, 719 (soyabean biodiesel) Analyses before treatment with Magnidon: Na+ = 26 ppm MG = 0.70 DG = 0.17 Analyses after treatment with Magnidon (1 g of Magnidon/500 ml of biodiesel) Na+ = 0.1 ppm MG = 0.48 DG = 0.12 You can filter Magnidon, or any other similar clayish substance even at 50 micron. The trick is in multipass filtering using monofilament while building up a self-filtering cake that in fact will be filtering out more than a 1 micron filter would. The only thing to watch out for is the righ balance between the amount of Magnidon to filter out, the flow rate and the area of the filter and the maximum allowable pressure fall. Recommended max filtering is 1kg / sqm. This means if you would have a batch of 1000l and 2kg of Magnidon, your minimum filter area should be 2 sqm and you will end up with a cake of about 1/2cm. You can do with a smaller area at the expense of a higher pressure fall. Pricing of any material is always related to volume as costs buildup with transport. Please note that we do not sell any longer through this person on eBay who was actually overcharging. Magnidon costs EUR 8/kg. Happy brewing Dimitri Georganas Biodys Engineering |
