I read this article http://journeytoforever.org/biodiesel_vehicle.html#quality.

Anyone use this test?
I have and am a bit confused. My batch pass the 3/27 test but do this test and seperation is slow, but no middle layer. I read that if you shake bio and water vigorously you will get an emulsion even if the bio is good quality.

Any comments please.

The "Shake-m-up test" to which you refer is not actually a very useful test for full conversion. And while we are on the subject, there are quite a number of biodiesel ideas over on JTF that are either outdated, or just plain wrong, like the the "Fuel Proof", oops, I mean Fool Proof method for acid/base reactions.

In general, I have found this site to be better adherents of the scientific method, allowing and encouraging critical review of posted information. Quite a number of us have been banned from his "discussion" group for raising problematic questions. Around here, this is considered a badge of honor.

Finest regards,

Parrie,

the 27/3 test will give a good idea on conversion..all the fuel I make must pass this test before washing..!!

the shake up test..done at what stage..
right after removing glycerin? - it'll fail! I have never had a batch that would pass this! ever.
afer the first wash the BD will look like orange juice..
it'll stay looking like OJ until almost the last wash..then it'll turn back to what it started out like. strange I know but this is what it looks like. the last wash will leave the BD nearly clear..clear in a mason jar but not sparkling..now it just needs drying. then it'll sparkle.

Thanks Troy and dkenny.

I figured as much. My shake test turned out a two layer affair after 1 hour. But this morning I saw the top layer is actually all soap because a small layer of bio started forming. Washing my bio has given no problems. Thanks for a great forum, I have learned a lot so far!!

About the only thing the "shake 'em up" test is good for is to determine if you have sufficently
washed your biodiesel after three washes or more.
