This week marks the one year anniversary of my 99 E300 TD conversion and I'd like to toot my own horn. The conversion was done at American Green Fuels in Houston TX with 60,000 miles on the car. I drove to Houston from Jackson, Mississippi (400 miles one way) and spent 4 nights in a hotel while they did the conversion. I now have 84,000 and the car runs great. They installed a Golden Fuel System. This WVO system has been flawless. I've made a few errors while learning about collecting and filtering oil, had a few oil spill accidents, had to pump the tank once of 20 gallons that had gotten water in it from one of my storage barrels which will cause the car to stop running, then the battery died from trying to crank it so many times...user errors, not system errors! Before the conversion I'd seen web site forums of discussions of this model car and how it should have the fuel system changed by drilling into the diesel filter housing to change it to a push/pull or vise versa. This is simply not true in my case. Any modification like that would have just been overkill. One Caveat--I live in MS where we have about 8 months of summer. Modifications like that might be needed in colder climates. When my car gets to normal operating temp, I simply flip the switch mounted down low near my left knee and the car transitions seemlessly onto veg oil. People always ask, "How many miles do you get on veg oil?" Answer--I get 25 to 27 MPG depending how heavy my foot is on the accelerator. I buy my filters online for about $7 and it will last me about 3000 miles before my vacuum gauge mounted on the windshield frame tells me it is clogging. Over the past 3 weeks I drove 1977 miles on 9.5 gallons of diesel---thats 209 miles per gal of diesel! Gotta love it. Just a personal note to John (Dukegrad98) in Houston--thanks buddy for all the tips! Nice meeting you and thanks for dinner! Thanks Bud and Ryan at American Green Fuels--job well done!
Congrats, John! Make sure you give me a shout next time you are passing through Houston again. There's always good Mexican food to be had around here.
For other folks reading... My '98 E300 has the same conversion, done by the same good folks at American Greenfuels. I have about 30,000 miles on the conversion (about 202k total), and my best trip ever was approximately 5800 miles on 4.5 gallons of diesel. I run B100 in the main tank and WVO in the secondary tank. I use a centrifuge to clean my WVO, and haven't clogged a filter since I started doing that -- I now change it as routine maintenance every 4,000-5,000 miles. As John said, the Racor element is only $7 online, so it's cheap insurance to keep it clean. Overall, it's been a great ride for the last two years.
Say, if anyone is interested, I'll probably be selling her very soon to step into something a little bit newer!
