The W124 chassis 300D (pre E Class facelift) has the OM603 engine, which is a 3.0 litre six-cylinder turbocharged engine that appeared for one year only, 1987. The Turbo Diesel W124 appeared anew in 1990 until 1993, as the 300D 2.5 Turbo, with the OM602 engine. The latter engine was a 2.5 litre five cylinder turbocharged engine.

The OM603 engine family was a straight-6 Diesel automobile engine from Mercedes-Benz used from 1986 through 1994.

The engine has a capacity of 2996cc and in many respects the engine is similar to the OM617 engine. Version 603.960 is turbocharged; the others are naturally aspirated.

The camshafts and injection pump are driven by duplex chain from the crankshaft. A separate single row chain drives the oil pump. The camshaft operated the valves via hydraulic bucket tappets; valve clearance adjustment is automatic.

Fuel injection is indirect. A Bosch PES in-line injection pump is used, with a mechanical governor and and vacuum-operated stop control. The pump is lubricated by a connection to the engine oil circulation and the fuel lift pump is mounted on the side of the injection pump. Preheating is by glow plugs with automatic control of preheating time.

OH....you are saying that 1987 was the only year the 603 engine appeared IN a 300D, right? Because the 603 turbocharged engine was in the 86 and 87 300SDL models.

Jim D. (on Infopop) has a 1987 300D with the 603 turbocharged engine.

It may be that in the US the only year that the 603.960 was available was 1987 but in other parts of the world there is more variation. I have a 91 300D from Japan which has that engine in it. Cheers Dan

Between the .96X, very little, the .97x was .5L larger and had bendable connecting rods. Oops.
