Piedmont Biofuels Cooperative is a biodiesel cooperative that operates within a organically-run market produce and oil-seed crop garden. Piedmont Biofuels has continuous openings for three interns during the Spring (Jan-May), Summer (May-Aug), and Fall (Aug-Dec) semesters.
Our original mission was the production of biodiesel onsite, however the project has grown substantially over the years. We have an active agritourism program that welcomes thousands of visitors each year, and we have implemented a variety of green building technologies--from cob to straw bale to recycled materials. We have implemented passive solar, solar electric and solar thermal for everything from green building techniques to process heat for our biodiesel process. Although Piedmont Biofuels principal focus is in the production of biodiesel, and that is where the majority of our expertise lies, we are continuously growing and expanding our work in all areas of renewable energy and green building. This is a completely unique opportunity to spend your days and nights immersed in biodiesel and renewable energy conversations. Past interns have gone on to work in commercial biodiesel settings, grey water treatment work, chemical engineering, and even vegetable oil collection! Housing is provided at our research farm in Chatham County, where we produce vegetables for market and operate a greenhouse that is heated by vegetable oil. The farm specializes in the cultivation of heirloom varieties of vegetables, and researching bioregionally sound oil producing crops for on-farm energy production. Firewood for home heating is provided from our "Wood Management Center" onsite, where interns learn to harvest, split and stack firewood. The internship runs alongside a semester-long biofuels course taught at Central Carolina Community College. Interns receive tuition assistance for the Biofuels course upon its successful completion. The Biofuels course at the college is an opportunity to study biodiesel in an academic setting where ideas can be tested. The biofuels class curriculum includes topics such as: Biodiesel Chemisty, SVO conversions, fuel quality testing, agriculture and biofuels, emissions, ASTM specifications and the regulatory layer. A small library of energy and sustainable farming titles is available on project. Prospective candidates should want to leave a legacy. Current projects include the reconstruction of our wetland, setting up an anaerobic biodigester to treat our waste water, increasing our biodiesel analytical capabilities, participating in a fuel quality workshop, and participating in the normal operations of our farm, our co-operative housing, and fuel making projects. Preference will be given to those individuals without vehicles, or in diesel vehicles. Successful applicants are extremely mindful of their ecological footprint, and are desirous of making it smaller than it is today. Piedmont Biofuels is populated by intense, passionate, obsessed individuals who work day and night on societal change and expect the same from all those on project. Our work on issues associated with sustainability is known throughout grassroots biodiesel in the United States and Canada, and we currently enjoy an active voice in biofuels policy in North Carolina. Readers familiar with the current canon of energy related literature highly desired. Interested parties should be well versed in our website, http://www.biofuels.coop, and may find the Intern's Journals section useful. Our day to day operation is typically detailed in our Energy blog See: http://energy.biofuels.coop/ Application instructions: Landing an internship at Piedmont Biofuels requires a site visit, an interview, and being selected by our Executive Director, Matt Rudolf. Email your CV along with a letter of interest to matt@biofuels.coop to apply. |
