Hello,
I'm new to making biodiesel so i've been doing a lot of reading on the internet. I've found that there is a lot of GREAT information on how to build the equipment necessary (processors, wash tanks, etc). However, from what i've found, there isn't a lot of information that shows the process and HOW to use this equipment. Here is a good example of what i'm talking about: http://www.biodieselcommunity.org/howitsmade/ It is a very good "high-level" view of the process that needs to take place, but it doesn't get into the specifics that are necessary. (like how much time to wait between steps, how to determine how much lye & methanol to mix to the oil, etc). I think this information is out there somewhere, it's just that i haven't found it yet. I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction of this information. Thanks, George |

George,
It's all right here. You just need to do a lot of reading. There are not a lot of step by step directions, because the method varies between processors and operators. E.G. some people use 20% methanol, some use 22%. Others (like me) use a two step base/base procedure and use only abot 16% MeOH. Then there is the acid/base method for very high titrating oil. Some (most) use a pump to mix, some a mechanical mixer (propellor), some a flat stick, others the rock and roll method. Titration, however, has been pretty much agreed upon. A 5 gram base plus titration for NaOH and a 7 gram base plus titration for KOH. Even these are not hard and fast rules, but they give the best conversion. Of course a temp of at least 50 deg C. is used as well, but again, not by everybody. Then there's the 5% pre wash, bubble washing, mist washing, reverse washing, waterless washing, and of course, let us not forget the great unwashed. Start out with small batches, and work from there. Design a processor that you would like and ask us to critique it (careful though, you may get more than you bargained for). Just don't be afraid of making BD, and don't be afraid of changing your mind about things. Most of us who've been doing this for years are still changing and tweaking our setup and/or process. HTH Have fun and work safely. Blessings. Joe 1999 Chevy Suburban 6.5L TD 1987 Mercedes 300TD and 1986 Chevy Cube van 6.2L. WWW.RillaBioFuels.com WWW.RillaBioFuels.com |

Start with Making a Small Batch, the numbers there, if scaled up, will make good fuel. A lot of variation from that comes from tweaking the numbers to make good, but cheaper, fuel. Everything you do, no matter how big the batch, is based on per liter and then multiplied up.
New oil Test batch: 1L oil 6g NaOH (6g/L) 250ml methanol (25%) New oil Big batch; 100L oil 600g NaOH (6g/L) 25L Methanol (25%) See, scales up evenly. |

Cool. Thanks for the information guys.
I guess my problem is that I wonder if everything 'translates' from the small to the big. Examples: 1. Processing Most processors use a water heater to heat up the oil and remove the water from it, right? How can i tell when this is complete since i can't see the tank and how does the watervapor escape? 2. Washing Will I still need to wash the BD 5 times if i use a wash tank such as this: http://www.utahbiodieselsupply.com/washtankplans2.php Will I also need to use 5 times the amount of water as BD that i create? I guess I just think more people would try this out if everything was spelled out for them in a single location. Then again, maybe there is one, i just haven't found it yet? Also, because it looks like the washing process will take the most time, I'm looking for alternatives. Does anyone have any experience with BioDry (http://www.floridabiodieselinc.com/biodry.html)? (Please forgive me if this isn't the best location to post this question.) Thanks. George |

#1 Using the water heater is to heat the oil then pump into a settling tank. The oil doesn't get hot enough to vaporize the water. The heat speed separation of the water from the oil.
#2 I spray wash with about 50% water per cycle. That usually works out to about 3 times the amount of BD. I wash with hard water. Others probably use even less water. |
