How can sewage (household septic) be used to make bio-fuels?

It won't make biodiesel, but you can use a digester to make methane, then convert that to methanol. Methanol is the alcohol used to make biodiesel (~20%). Seems like too much trouble to me.

I would assume that "fresh" waste is better than septic tank sludge, at least for making methane.
When I was in college a couple of decades ago, someone wrote a thesis about using waste (I assume including human excrement) to grow algae. I'm going to try to find that thesis in the next month or so. Anyway, Carbon/Phosphorous/Nitrogen/Water + Sunlight are the basics to grow algae. Bacteria, of course, can be used to make methane. And, perhaps one could force it to make alcohols instead. I think I recently posted a note about Cokata Energy http://www.coskataenergy.com/ They are taking various "feedstocks" and making methane, and the feeding that into another stage to make alcohols. Of course, Methane (Natural Gas) has value too. It can be used to fuel vehicles, or to run household stuff like stoves/heaters. |
