In advance, thanks again for everybodys patience and always answering my dumb questions. I have done the search thin on soy oil? Know I am wondering if I need extra fuel pumps and filters on my truck...thought i could mix wash dry dump it in the beast and go? But that is not my question. Question. In my relentless search for bio sources I ran into a guy who manages a bar and he gave me 30 gallons or so in cubes of soy oil very black. Since titrating is currently kicking my a##, i've been doing the redneck titration method. Starting with 1 litre of oil start mixing different combos of 250ml meth and (starting with 3 tsp liquid form which has been working with the clearer wvo) lye. That is how I got through the first 20 gallons of wvo but it was clear. I can not see any seperation or at least, 1 batch had an 1" of red seperation..looked like dark cherry red amd the rest is black. second batch 1/2 tsp more of lye yielded solid black mix, third batch 4tsp of lye solid black. So went backwards..2 1/2 tsp of lye and got 1" of clear bio but the rest black. Then being a true redneck I went crazy and mixed 1 batch with 1 tsp lye..got 1/2" of seperated bio the rest black... and finally 8 tsp of lye with a batch and got Solid stuff. On a lighter note making jelly was something I had been subconsciuosly wanting to do..just to see what it looked like. Anyway back at the ranch was wondering what to do with the black stuff? Tried using flash lights to see seperation but really can not see anything? Toss and stick with the mexican restraunts? Thanks in advance this is turning out to being as expensive as my jeep habits..I mean hobby. And yes , payday I will be ordering somebodies titration kit.
Liquid lye? Should be dry little beads if NaOH, flakes if KOH. Don't put water in your solution, water kills the reaction. Especially if you have high titrating oil, which apparently you do. Some use what is called the Concentrated aqueous method and have gotten decent results, but I don't recommend it for beginners or for poor quality oil. If there is a little water in the oil, adding more only makes it worse. Test batches are a good way to bracket your process, but a proper titration is faster, easier and much more precise. HTH
