Hi, I have a chance to purchase some 93% pure sulfuric acid at a good price. Does anybody know if I adjust the quantity of sulfuric acid to offset the purity, will it work OK? If the acid is 93%, does that mean the rest is water?? Would this be too much water in the reaction??
Da*%, I'm starting to sound like a soap opera.

I don't have enough experience with the acid/base process to know weather this acid will work.

Would you be referring to the sulfuric acid I have for sale in the classified section? If so, great! If not, the 93% worked for me (which is a guaranteed minimum). I had pretty good oil (5.5 ish) but it always brought the titration down into the 2's and saved KOH. It just took too long and now I'm getting KOH at $.88/lb instead of $4.00/lb from Braintan.

If you assume that the acid contains 7% water and you're adding 1ml of acid per liter of oil processed, we're only talking about .07ml of water added per liter of oil. That is almost exactly one drop...

I've used Roebic Drain Flow Inhibited Sulfuric Acid - which is "approx. 90%" H2SO4 according to their MSDS. Worked great dropped my titration 19-22 oil down to 2.

Basically I used the FATTA method and then let it settle for a week or so and drained off the water/acid mixture on the bottom. After running the 2nd half of FATTA as directed (I replaced the volume I drained off with an equivalent volume of methanol) came out great. Washed easily.

Ran 60L or oil titration 22
FATTA stage 1
Process 8 hours and settle for a week
Drain off 2 L of acid/water
FATTA stage 2 but added 2L of "extra" methanol
Finished and washed like normal.
Process

Hey JLKunka,
If I were anywhere near the Richmond area I'd be happy to use your acid. I have a guy over here by me that mixes and sells cleaner. He ordered the acid for particular customer and the order never came through. I can get it at wholesale (dirt cheap). Thanks for the info.

Jequinn,
That's a serious drop. I wish I had time to let my oil settle like that.

Hi JE. Thanks for the post. I also have some high FFA oil, though not as high as yours. Just a couple of questions: the original amount of H2SO4 and methanol added to the wvo? What was your process temp? Did you titrate during the 8 hour process time? For stage 2, after draining off the acid/water, how much methanol and NaOH did you add to the process? Thanks and I have some contacts in the Huntsville area that might get you some better quality oil than the 22 FFA, if you are interested. Thanks again for your post.

Be carefull about 93%. The remaining can easily be anything that in trace amoounts will offset the transferification reaction.

What color is your acid?
Was it in the original can?

Must likely, the aid is mixed with water. Not good for fuel manufacturing.
