Does anyone routinely use their appleseed for acid esterification?
If I understand correctly the appleseed is a modified hot water heater. I assume that most hot water heater's are glass lined (ceramic coating on inside of tank) and would give some protection from corrosion.
It would be interesting to know whether the appleseed tank is good enough to do acid esterification.

I have made several batches with acid in my appleseed. I do not think corrosion is an issue. The acid / methanol mixture is introduced ahead of the pump impeller very slowly. It is vigorously mixed with the oil by the pump and immediately begins the chemical process with the FFA. In the few seconds it takes the mixture to travel up the tube to fall into the tank it is already dilute and chemically altered.

Norman,
What kind of pump and what materials (black, galvanized, plastic) are plumbing made of?
How hot did you run the reaction and are you using the electric heating element?
Thanks.

Using the standard Applesed design with black iron pipe, the HF clear water pump and electric 110 V heating elements. I run the acid phase at 135 to 140 dgrees, and the base at 130 to 135.
