I got one 5 gal jug of oil from a guy that had like .3% water and I got the ffa to go from like 1.26% down to like .25%. Then he got about 200 more of them and the water percent went up to like .8%. I got a new ffa of like 2.25% and after running another acid step in the lab I think all the methanol escaped up my stirring rod bushing. Well, the acid number really didn't do anything spectacular as expected so I re-reacted it with about 1/2 as much methanol and the whole thing just about blew my mind apart. I have an acid correction for the titration and that showed that the esterification went to like 99.95% completion. I even water washed and dried to see what a "unadulterated" titration would yield. Still the TAN was over 1.2 or 1.3. It needs to be in ASTM spec which is .8 for TAN. First, is .8 too high for moisture and second, if anyone is still reading this, can glycerin be used during the esterification to absorb/remove water??
Thanks

I can run the 1000 gallons in the reactor through a heat loop, keep the condenser off above and leave the -40 degree chiller on to condense the water vapor off away from the wet oil.
Solves one problem, others remain. I'll react the dried oil in the lab early this am.

Ok, I'm running 553.9 g arby's oil @ 65 degrees C. FFA 2.28%. I added 7% H2SO4 (.884 g) and 225% MeOH (28.4g). This sample lost almost 5g whilst drying @ 90 degrees C under vacuum.
I use 7% to be a little more aggressive treating the ffa. 5% didn't seem to be cutting it. Perhaps water was preventing the acid reaction to go to completion?? But I was getting really good results like (oops there I go again-sleep deprivation) TAN = .5 when done.
