By popular demand Knice-N-Clean has released a light version of the KNC BDG Soap Calculator! This is a free soap calculator that can be used to formulate liquid or bar recipes. These recipes can include your biodiesel glycerin and/or other traditional ingredients. The interface is really easy to use and you can even print the recipes!!! We have included the most common whole oil and fatty acid ingredients. However, if you find an oil or ingredient you would like to have added to the calculator, please let us know. Comments and suggestions will be greatly appreciated! rick@knicenclean.com ![]() Enjoy! Bunk, So it's working in firefox? Still have several details I want to add... fatty acid ratio, hardness and thickening ratio's... And the list goes on and on. Hope you guys find it useful. -Rick http://www.knicenclean.com your single-most largest free BDG soaping content on the internet. Rick, When I click on the first link in your post it opens a page that says download microsoft silverfox. I can't do it on dial up here at home. What is silverfox?? I've never seen/heard of it before.

Silverlight is a Microsoft runtime engine. It allows for rich applications that will run in any browser. Most vista and windows 7 machines have it pre-installed. It's similar to having to have flash for some web applications. http://www.microsoft.com/silverlight/ This also allows me to have the light version for the web and another version that can run as a windows application too. Basically allows me to use the same code over for two similar applications. It's not a really big download, not sure about dial-up. You can get a free silverlight runtime disk from Microsoft I believe. How did you download Flash or adobe for your browser? You could use the same method to get the silverlight runtime. Worst case I could compile it into a regular windows application and send you a copy. The full version is a windows application. -Rick http://www.knicenclean.com your single-most largest free BDG soaping content on the internet. Roger that, I'll see if I can download it when I'm out with the lap top in town. It just gave me an estimated time of 25 minutes to download, Ain't gonna happen tonight.

Let me know if you get it worked out... I can also burn a copy of the Silverlight runtime to a disk and send it your way via snail mail. -Rick http://www.knicenclean.com your single-most largest free BDG soaping content on the internet. Yes, it's working in FireFox on WinXP. I already had the FireFox Silverlight plug-in installed. It does not work right in FireFox on Ubuntu 9.10 with Novell Moonlight 2.2 and the Microsoft Media Pack codecs installed. The page opens very slowly, but eventually does load. Everything looks OK but nothing can be selected from the drop-downs. When you click on the selection it won't "stick" and the box above the selection stays blank. EDIT: OK, I can select the caustic type and units, that part works. I can also select ingredients other than glycerin, but it still does not calculate the recipe. Glycerin cannot be selected. ![]() I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do with the SAP % when I select glycerin. The Permaculture recipe calls for 38.5 grams NaOH per liter glycerin. I have to put 27% in the SAP column for it to come up with the right amount of caustic. What does "27%" indicate? Ken

Thanks Ken, I will have to see if I can find a way to test the calculator with Ubuntu and Novell. Do you have another browser you can use in the interim? The SAP% is the percentage of saponifiable elements left over in you BDG. If you are using the Permaculture 38.5 you would use 27% for the other 40g per liter you would use 28% or 29%. These numbers are for NaOH glycerin and Bar soaps. Liquid soap equivalent 54g - 27% and 57g-58g for 27% and 29%. Speaking of Permaculture... I wish I knew who that guy was... He is truly the grandfather of BDG soaping and I tip my hat in respect to him. Hybrid soaps will use BDG saponified with the "opposite" catalyst and/or BDG saponified with the same catalyst used in a recipe in which some of the ingredients are using the "opposite" catalyst. This stuff will be build into the calculator as it progresses. -Rick http://www.knicenclean.com your single-most largest free BDG soaping content on the internet. I could boot WinXP and open it in FireFox but where's the fun in that? I don't know Terry McGleish (author of the Permaculture article) but Graydon has a link to some of his work on his website. Maybe Gradon knows him. Unfortunately the www.eline2000.com website has been undergoing redesign (apparently since May 2008) and isn't completely functional but there are some articles available. http://www.eline2000.com/biogen/biogenset.htm http://www.eline2000.com/barsoap/barsoap.htm http://www.eline2000.com/biodiesel/biodiesel.htm Ken

OK. I'm just used to seeing SAP values expressed as milligrams KOH per gram of fat. The next time I'm in WinXP I'll look at it again. Maybe it'll make better sense if I can plug some numbers in and see the results. Ken

Yep, I would love to have a chat with Terry. His Permaculture page on soap got me rolling when I first started making biodiesel. I turned my very first batch of glycerin into bar soap with his advice, still have a bar or two this many years later. Tim, I have added Beeswax to the list of ingredients. I've also adjusted the SAP value for PKO. -Rick http://www.knicenclean.com your single-most largest free BDG soaping content on the internet. Heatbeater is experimenting with using Calcium Hydroxide Ca(OH)2 in his soaps. To help support his effort I've added the Ca(OH)2 caustic to the KNC Soap Calculator. If there are any other requests for the calculator please let me know. Other whole oils anyone would like to try? -Rick http://www.knicenclean.com your single-most largest free BDG soaping content on the internet. Hi and Merry Christmas. I have see the soap calculator: http://www.knicenclean.com/recipes/rksoap100b.html but I cannot understand about “ 1 T sodium lactate” Can someone tell me what is the “T” ? Thanks

That is one US Tablespoon or about 14.235 grams. This will help hot processed soap remain pourable and also add hardness to the cured soap. -Rick http://www.knicenclean.com your single-most largest free BDG soaping content on the internet.
