I have a line on WVO that was never cooked with. I'm told it was used to clean pipes that carried salad dressing. it titrated at 50 ml. using KOH that would be 12.5+8 g= 20.5. thats almost 6.8 pounds for a 40 gallon batch. Does anyone have any experience with this type of canola oil? The guy I bought the processor from thought there may be an acid or cleaning agent in my oil and that I should look for answers here.

You could try washing your WVO with water. That might reduce the titration a little. If it lowers it a lot, then yes, you had/have something in the oil.

Thanks I'll try it. Anyone else have a way to test for "impurities" in my WVO?

Well I washed about 3/4 of a liter. The water is clear and there are 2 small globs that look like mucus on the bottom. I have never washed WVO before and have no idea what is supposed to be there. Before washing I heated the oil and covered it to see if condensation built up on the cover. A little at first but it quickly disappeared.
Next I'm thinking acid test. What should WVO ph be? 7.5 is neutral?

What do you call a snake on your windshield? Wink
Seriously, though, WVO does not have a pH. By definition, pH is for an aqueous solution. Titrating the oil is the best way to know how much free fatty acids are in it. That's why Rick recommended washing it. Any water soluble acids (such as vinegar) that are in it will be taken out of the oil. Then you would have a true reading of the FFA's in the oil. I have posted a short video on doing a titration on youtube. Here is the link. Unused oil should titrate pretty low, unless there is contamination in it. HTH Smile

I titrated it after washing and I got 49.5. I washed again and it was the same. I called a lab to see if they could test the oil. They said to wash it. Each time it should titrate less. Then I titrated oil a friend gave me that he had only used once. It titrated to 1. I'm stumped. I really want this oil to work. any other ideas?
Thanks, David

Eric?

Perhaps the question should be "What do you call a snake with an indian accent on your windsheild?"

Well on my 5th wash and titration hasn't changed. It is at 49ml. the guy I got the oil from says it was an organic place that they were cleaning the pipes. I wonder what would be used that is organic to clean pipes out.
Thanks, Everyone, David
