I was making biodiesel, and performed the titration, with a result of 7 ml. I then tried to create a .5 liter oil with 100 ml of methanol, with 6 grams of Lye. Almost immediately the substance turned to a pudding, almost gelatin consistency. Does anyone know what could have gone wrong. I also can not recall if the oil was heated enough, could that have been the problem? Please respond to my question, and thankyou.
What type of oil are you using (WVO or SVO) and what type of oil are you using (peanut, olive, corn, etc)? It's possible you might have water in your oil. It should be fine once the oil is heated to 145 degrees. The reaction should occur within 10 minutes.
I think a 7 mL titration is an indication of something wrong with the oil. Try drying and filtering. From what I've read, 3-6 mL is acceptable...anything more is challenging.
SO there is no water in my oil, atleast not enough to even make it simmer at 212, not even steam or anything, so it appears to just be an oil with a lot of free fatty acids. What can i do to stop this gelling from occuring?
